FullMetal Alchemist New Series 2009

I know I'm late to the game and all but my buddy in Iraq finally sent me the episode over Messenger.

Watching now. Loving the opening.

28 chapters behind. This material in the manga was covered in 2007. They should catch up around June or so, which is likely when the manga is ending.

Dude, if you liked episode 40, you would have -loved- the manga version. This was a letdown.

Didn't like the way they cut down the Mustang/Hawkeye code sequence. Originally, you saw Hawkeye spill out the whole story, which built up the suspense as to exactly what was going on. In your own head, you go from "what the hell is she rarabling on about?" to "holy CRAP she's telling him that Selim is Pride in code!". Total disappointment the way they cut to the chase like that.

They seemed to zoom through Xerxes a bit too, and should have taken the time to establish life there before its destruction, so the impact of the tragedy is even greater.

And the scene at the end credits was kind of unnecessary and the time it took up would have been better spent elsewhere.

Chapters 74 and 75 of the manga. Check them out.

Good first episode. I'm not all that fussed over this being a remake though. Hopefully it can retain a solid pace and story without losing faith to the manga (albeit with some deviations as the first ep demonstrated).

How many episodes are planned btw? Will it be as long as the first anime perhaps?

Yea I am not gonna lie Izumi is a bad ass. And Armstrong (the man) is pretty powerful too. I didn't expect most of what he was doing. I am looking forward to seeing who takes on the fuhrer and figuring out what the hell happened when homunculus tried to steal the philosophers stone from Hohenheim's body.

Funny you bring this up, because FMA creator Hiromu Arakawa did do research on "real" alchemy, and uses a lot of real-world alchemic syrabols. Some of the fruits of that research did show up in the latest episode of Brotherhood:

The page below is a pretty good explanation of the alchemic syrabols shown on the giant tattoo on Hawkeye's back:

And by the way, the original manga version of the Ishbal flashback in Brotherhood episode 30 blows the anime away. The anime removed or toned down a LOT of the material, as the manga was pretty brutal and lengthy (it was 170 pages, the anime generally covers half that amount in an episode)

Just one very small example:

Major Armstrong- they included the part with him creating the wall to cut off the refugees, then the refugees get wiped out by machine gun fire. What they didn't show was him walking through the remains of that massacre in a total daze, bodies everywhere, then he finRAB two Ishbalan survivors (a young woman and and old lady) hiding in a hole. He feels terrible for them, creates an exit and tells them to flee. As they're leaving, they look back at him, and - BANG! They're blown up by Kirablee right in front of him.

I think Brotherhood's been great so far, but I do think that episode 30 would have been better off as a multi-episode long epic.

Episode 62 was amazing. Ed beating the **** out of father was epic. Sad, though, ill miss alphonse--but im sure that ed will bring him back somehow.
