Full metal alchemist: Ed's arm.

You bring up a good point regarding how he put Al's soul into armor in that sort of physical condition; poor guys, they've been through so much...

Um...automail is metal; last I checked, metal doesn't have nerves. That's why Al wasn't able to feel the rain when entrapped in armor, as mentioned in one chapter of the manga. Why it hurts Ed when his automail is being attached is probably due to the feeling in his own nerves, not in the automail.

I'd say he doesn't feel pain. Not because its a metal arm or he is only transmuting the exterior of the arm, even though I agree those are valid points, but becaues there are differnt types of nerves. It would be extreamly complicated to connect all the sensory neurons, nor would it really be wise. All that would be benificial is to connect the motor neurons and if they have the ability to ones that sense touch. Although it would be much more simple (and from what I've seen from the attachment process is the likely case) that they only connect motor neurons.

As for it causing pain when attached, two reasons come to mind. The primary reason I suspect would be when the automail is first attached, it would obviously be painful if metal was bolted/fused/however they do it, into your skin. As for pain when secondary attachments occure, there are likely nerve endings in his arms that can feel pain, which when pressed cause pain upon reattachment.

I always thought the pain he felt when the arm was attached was in his actually flesh body. it doesnt make sense for a metal arm to feel pain because its metal. Maybe he would feel it if the arm were broken completely up to the point where the wires meet the nerves, but I dont know.
Besides, even if the arm did feel pain, he only transmutes the outside covering doesnt he?

This is basically my understanding/explanation of the situation regarding Al:

(spoilers for episode 20 and 26 of Brotherhood):

Basically, Al's armor is a conduit for Al's body. In episode 20 Ed theorized that Al's body must still exist out there, because Al still retains all of his old memories, and is capable of even creating new memories. There isn't a physical brain inside Al's armor, so all that information must be stored somewhere. Ed's theory is then that Al's body must still exist, and the soul and his real body are connected by the spirit. This is confirmed when in ep 26 Ed reopens the portal of truth and finRAB Al's body alive and well (though a bit sickly looking) waiting at The Gate.

So basically, my theory is that if Al's body can receive/store information in this way, perhaps it could also react and transmit information back.

Just my own speculation, nothing official.

Also, when it comes to whether or not I'd like Al's body... (episode 19 spoilers)
it was revealed that binding a soul to a shell that is not its original body is like sticking a round peg in a square hole. At some point, the new shell will reject the soul, and that person will be lost forever.

Personally, I wouldn't be too keen on that.

So was I right in remerabering that Al's soul is only in the armor cause of an alchemy syrabol thats inside the armor? and if its wiped off or something then the soul will escape the armor or something?
