I love movies with subtitles.
Unfortunatley, I haven't been watching many lately.

I thought of making a list, but it was begginning to be too big. So, I'll name a few groups of movies that I enjoy seeing:

- asian films. There's actually an asian filmes thread at this board. I love specially Wong Kar-Wai, Takeshi Kitano, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou.
- nouvelle vague movies: I love Fran

'la fille sur le pont' is one of my favorite french films....filmed in glorious black and white, it's a romantic fantasy...it's female lead is singer and actress vanessa paradis (johnny depp's long term french girlfriend)... and it also stars one of my favorite french actors, daniel auteuil....

"It's night on a Paris bridge. A girl leans over Seine River with tears in her eyes and a violent yearning to drown her sorrows. Out of nowhere someone takes an interest in her. He is Gabor, a knife thrower who needs a human target for his show. The girl, Adele, has never been lucky and nowhere else to go. So she follows him."

just mentioning french films.....

another french film from a couple of years ago...which i really enjoyed is 'chacun cherche son chat' (when the cats away)...the story...a shy young woman decides to take a vacation and while she's away she leaves her beloved cat with the old woman who lives next door....when she arrives home she's informed that her cat has run away...the shy young woman is then forced to go out and meet her neighbors to enlist their aid in finding her cat....

I'm used to see movies with subtitles. It's true that it helps you understand other languages better. I learned a lot of english by watching movies in english.

I've heard many good things about Whale Rider. But I haven't seen it.

I love Life is Beautiful. It's one of my all time favorite movies. I'm usually not into World War II movies or stories, but this one was just wonderful.

Amelie (love this film to bits!)
And this Korean film called My Sassy Girl (it's really cute)
and also another Korean film called The Tale of Two Sisters

Was it a french movie with Juliette Binoche, directed by Kriztof Kieslowsky?
I love that movie!

Well, this thread needed to comeback!

As for Love me if you dare I hated Amelie so while I agree they *look* the same I don't feel the need to compare them. I loved Love me if you dare but that doesn't mean I have no criticisms for it, all the contrary. I already explained what I didn't like in another so I don't want to repeat myself.

I just watched Bad Education and wow. Nice piece of film, wow! Gael Garcia Bernal looked like a woman so that was a bit scary at time seeing at how "masculine" he can look at other times. That man is a true actor and I hope he continues to get great material.

I can't wait to listen to the Almodovar commentary. I've never heard him speak that much so that'll be very interesting. Movies from Spain are just so good, not all because well, there's always the bad apple but the ones I've seen just wrap me around their little cinematic fingers!

A very long engagement will be released on DVD soon and I can't wait to watch that!

i just saw a french movie called City of Lost Children . it was a little weird but i liked how it was made. same director as Amelie.

Yeah you're right...i just love a good old clasic....Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, the bad the good and the ugly.......my fav of all tiem is Gone with the wind...i just love it!!!

HI! am new here!

Windstruck (Korean) and Life is beautiful made me :bawl:

just wanted to share that.

hey, Isy!

I know!!
Tesis, Abre los Ojos, The Others and now The Sea Inside....god....a friend told me Javier Bardem was incredible on it. Nothing weird about his Golden Globe nomination...;)

i loved das experiment. it's pretty disturbing even tho the story isn't new since it's based on a true story.
another great movie with him is "knocking on heaven's door". it's a road movie & in my opinion, the best german movie ever.

i've never even heard of winterschl

films from countries besides the united states....i can't get enough of them....movies from foreign lands that i want to see....from the director of 'amelie'......i've seen the trailer more than a few times....and i'll see anything that's french......

Un long dimanche de fiançailles was already released in my country. I'm thinking of watching it soon because I've heard a lot about it.

I loved "Tesis". It's directed by Amenabar, the director of "Abre los Ojos", also a good spanish movie.
He also directed "The Others", but I'm not sure if we can consider that a foreign movie. It has Nicole Kidman.

re: Whale Rider -- yes the acting was very good and the story is not something we see everday. its about a young girl who is idealistic in taking on being the head tribeperson, but their tribe are patriarchial. her grandfather is the head and is like, scouting the next in line. very good. :)

A couple recent favorites:
Un long dimanche de fiançailles (released in America as A Very Long Engagement)- New Jeunet movie with Audrey Tatou. I saw it for the first time in French with no subtitles, and got a good portion of it, but it's very confusing, so seeing it with English subtitles helped considerably. It's an amazing and beautiful story though. All about never giving up on the one you love. It's got some of the cinematic oddness of Amelie but not quite as much, the story doesn't call for it as much. But it's awesome, I definitely recommend it. It was nominated for a few Oscars for cinematography-type stuff, but not for Best Foreign Film. :(

The Story of the Weeping Camel- Came out over the summer, I know, but I saw it recently. Plus it was just nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary. It's so beautiful and simple. And you feel so incredibly close to the family and their animals. I kind of got the impression that it was part documentary, part orchestrated story, but I guess it's just a documentary, which is amazing. It made me want to be a Mongolian steppe nomad and live in a yurt.
