Forbidden Planet (1956): 4/5

Exciting and interesting sci-fi film with a good story (taken from Shakespeare's The Tempest), a bizarre electronic score - that sounded familliar as soon as I heard it, I've probably heard noises like that before - and excellent special effects for the time, in fact they were probably ahead of their time. Reminded me of Star Trek in some ways and Robby The Robot looked familliar too.
Anne Francis is beautiful (a few of her dresses are a bit racy for 1950's surely?!), and it was fun seeing a young Leslie Neilsen who I only know from Naked Gun/Police Squad.
The 2 disc DVD transfer is very good. :)

aye, Leslie Nielsen in a shit load of makeup. He out does the chavvy girls in twon with all that crap on his face :D

Wasn't it that there was an invisible moster outside getting closer and closer?

One of my favourite films. Hard to believe it was made in the 50s - the special effects look great!

'Twas one of the main influences for Star Trek apparently.

Monsters from the Id........

Maybe the best Sci Fi movie of all time.

Ripe for a re-do, but they better give it the respect it deservers.

The Krell, so powerful they had created society without instrumentology. They had created machines so powerful and advanced, they could create just my mere thought alone......

But they forgot about their dreams and nightmares.

What is the two disc set like? Lots of extras? :)

theres been talk of a new version with james cameron involved.a possible trilogy including a prequel showing the original lot who landed on the planet. dont know if the uk version is the same as the u.s one which i have. you get a few documentries,a deleated scene, the invisible boy movie and in my one, some movie carRAB and a little plastic robbie the robot.it all comes in a fancy tin box.

There are some excellent extras, 2 commentaries and lots of deleted scenes. I might get the Blu Ray when it comes out. Wonder if they'll do a new transfer?

I'd got the DVD for a fiver yonks ago and hadnt seen it, but it's a very good film

Cheers for the feedback. Will deffinately be getting that disc set.:)

Of all Sci Fi, I think I have seen that film the most. Followed oddly enough by Tron.......

And Cameron heading a trilogy? I need a cold shower :D

I have that set too. Absolutely fantastic movie, my joint favourite classic sci-fi movie of all time, along with The Day the Earth Stood Still. The box set is beautiful, a rare case of the studios actually getting the box art right, the back of the tin is very nice. Can't wait for the blu-ray. Yep, Roddenberry's Star Trek was directly influenced by FP. Everything about the movie is great, and the set designs, whoa, just check out that Krell stuff!

and if you like FP, check out the Czech (ha) film Ikarie XB-1, "the missing link between Forbidden Planet and 2001 A Space Odyssey". It's very good

and if you liked that, try the time-traveling Nazi comedy film by the same director - Tomorrow I'll Wake Up And Scald Myself With Tea. Extremely funny

September 20th is the date for Bluray .
I think the US release is around the same time.
One hopes they have done a new transfer as the HD DVD was a bit disappointing.

The reason the effects were so good for the time was that they had people from Disney working on it.

Robbie the Robot popped up a few times after the film and even appeared in 2 episodes of Lost In Space
