my husband since he was a child occasionally got food hung in his throat that would not move for hours. he would drool and tried drinking liquiRAB to push it down that some times backfire and come back up. the last few months he seems to be getting worse. he had a barium swallow when he was younger and they did not see any thing. Has any one else experianced this. im concerned for him.

I have been having the same issue for close to 4 years. I thought it might be the tongue weakening, however, I'm only 32!! I also have very mild cerbral palsy, but this really came on very suddenly and hasn't gone away. I have realized the last few months that certain fooRAB would bring about this discomfort, starting with vegetable fried rice. Now, I would pretty much avoid all the hard vegetables due to choking fears, and eat just rice and peas. Even s o, I would STILL get that stuck feeling, thinking, can I choke on peas & rice??!! But reading this board and these symptoms of acid reflux, I think this is what I was suffering these four years!!

I went also for a barium swallowing test, which came out normal. The doc was even reassuring me during the procedure. Not only that, my GP didn't even call me to the office for the results - he told me over the phone. That alone reassured me somewhat, however, to this day I do not know what indeed was the "normal" result outcome. What does normal mean? I know this barium swallow test also shows acid if you have, right? Not sure that.

Anyway, I went to my pharmacist whom I know, and I told him that after eating veg fried rice I feel a sensation of s/th being stuck etc, and he gave me zantac. I tried it & it worked. It goes away in minutes. However, I try not to use it often, b/c I really havent been to a doc for an acid reflux diagnosis, the feeling is there for up to 3 hours. I drink water etc and it just doesn't go.

I also read that acid reflux can cause the esophagus to contract, resulting in a more narrow air way, not permitting food to go down. Have you read this? Maybe have your husband try zantac, or ask for more tests. I'm really nervous about seeing a doc, but how long can one suffer anyway?

My grandmothers sister had the same problem with swallowing her whole life just about. We took her here in Miami to one of the top GI men who did an endoscopy on her and while she was under they stretch the throat somehow.

He has seen that several times in his experience apparently. He came out after to tell us she would be fine when she woke up and that he had stretched her esophagus so nothing would get stuck.

Sure enough she was fine when she woke up and later that evening she had dinner of course being careful and realized the food went down with no problem. She was estatic about it as you can emagin after suffering so long.
That was about 7 years ago and she is fine to this day. I hope this helps your husband or anyone else reading that has this. Good luck!:jester:

So, you are not a wake during an edoscopy? Has your grandmother relapsed at all since?

No, they put you to sleep for an endo, I think there sre some things they do in some offices where they look at your throat but you would be asleep with this. Just ask your Doc about it.

Well, that sounRAB very reassurinig that they put you to sleep. I have a terrible gag reflex. I do not vomit of course, by the doctor does take a step back as a precaution!! Which makes me feel erabarrassed, but I can't help it there.

Can I ask you, prior to an endo, do they or can they look at your throat in other ways as to diagnose any acid reflux? I'm just worried about my nerves, the gag reflux, etc...it just doesn't make me calm. I'm just wondering, what else do they or might they ask to see prior to this exam for such a diagnosis of acid reflux, or possible esophageal issue, besides the endo? Thanks!

I went to him many years ago because I had stomach problems. He asks a lot of questions which he should. Like heart burn, burnning or in yourcase what you would eat that made you gag probably. What medications you take if any.
Then they usually set you up for an endo in a week. They put you to sleep and then they put a tube with a camera down you to look around and see if your tummy is red maybe from parasites and they may take a little biopsy maybe if you have been out of the country and of course growths. I mean who knows what they see Lol

Then when you wake up either he will tell you then he will see you in a few days and talk to you about what the camera saw.
Honestly, it doesn't hurt at all. I think you can't eat after midnight or drink anything. They usually do this to find out about a reflux which I do have and I was out of the country back then and I had parasites. That biopsy I didn't feel that either, just a little bit of skin they look at and test in my case. I had to go on antibiotics and then go on bland diet for the reflux. I have it done about once a year.
I am sure if you talk with a upper GI man that does this he will reasure you of everything they will do and maybe they will fix your gag. Don't worry, fixing it will be better then gagging all the time. I gagged when I ate stuff too greasy.:)
