First and last time I eat tilapia.

I was a friends place for lunch today. She seasoned and floured the
tilapia. Very simple. I couldn't stand it. Neither could she. I
just don't care for the flavour, and I am not a big fan of fish
anyway. She bought it frozen, thawed and sauted it quickly. The
texture wasn't bad, but I think I'll stick with canned salmon if I'm
going to eat fish.

Where was the fish from? I eat tilapia regularly, but some I had that
came from China and it was terrible. I've also had some from there
that was OK, but for the few cent's difference, I don't risk it any
more.

From the supermarket. Seriously:
I don't know where it was from. I had a thick piece which had a lousy
taste, and then a thinner piece which was much milder in flavour, but
still had that same taste as the thicker piece. It may have been from
China. I'll phone her and ask her to save the package.

A Chinese restaurant that I went to in Falls Church, Virginia, had a
tank full of swimming tilapia. It was served as steamed whole fish and,
as far as I am concerned, was just a big mistake.

I get some very good tilapia from China. They are 5-7oz fillets
raised specifically for the American restaurant industry.

While many of the Asian fish farms are probably shitholes (literally),
there are some respectable ones. There is no guarantee that American
fish farmers are doing it any better than the Chinese, or that they
are "Environmentally Friendly". There are very few regulations
regarding fish farming. And I'm beginning to think this "Seafood
Watch" site is a bunch of bullshit.

The Mexican market here sells whole tilapia deep fried. Ug-ly.

Tilapia is farm raised in the filthiest and most polluted water you can
imagine. I would not so much as even touch it without gloves on. The acrid
taste is from the pollution.

your friend probably didn't clean the fish properly. You want to wash it
gently but thoroughly with lime. This must be done extensively with
fish.

Also the fish may have started to spoil. Fresh fish is always better.
Regardless of where it is from, if it is going bad it will never taste
the best.
