First 9 minutes of Eva 1.01 streamed

Shinji was quite competent for a 14 year old that was abandoned.

You know, until his best friend nearly killed by his own hanRAB, Asuka in a coma, Rei dead, then respawned with no memories, and killed the only person that gave him affection....

But totally glossed over with gay jokes, sure.

Did anyone else see that banner at the top for Eva 1.01 that said "The Rebuild of the original Giant Robot anime" and now they switched the "original" for "groundbreaking?"

Shinji never gets enough respect. Heck, the entire cast in general are widely misinterpreted. I've seen tons of creepy fanboys who say they like Asuka because she's apparently self serving and sadistic and doesn't think of anyone but herself...completely ignoring the fact that the story makes it clear that it's more of a protective shell Asuka has formed to survive after her horrid past.

There are some people who massively overrate Eva but I think in terms of character development/motivation, it's hard to beat Anno on this one. How about we acknowledge that instead of complaining that Shinji isn't apparently as 'manly' as Kamina and the overdone drill meme?

I still think those pointing out differences between this movie and the series are basically splitting hairs.

Me, I'm waiting for 2.0, which from all reports is when the REAL differences begin. I had better not be disappointed again.

Well, a lot of anime fans just latch onto one thing when judging characters anyway. It's a fairly unsophisticated way of viewing fiction, but in general that's what most mainstream audiences do anyway. Which is why most fans wouldn't make good writers--most of us are way too concerned with "likeability" and "no emo" and all those 21st century reactionary terms.
