No, unfortunately, rescuing the three people is the absolute ONLY way to get an Orion's Bolt in the whole game. Try the chapter again, and this time, be quicker. The poison spider doesn't appear until very late in the Chapter. As a hint, the boss of this chapter is in the top middle-right of the screen. Also, you can use the torch you received from the previous chapter. Good luck!
