Fictional Species In Animation

Howdy. I wanted to create this thread so that we could all post pictures of the fictional species that have been created for animated programs over the years, as well as to discuss those fictional species and whether or not more animated programs should attempt to create their own species of animals instead of using real animals that we’re already familiar with. I’m sure that there will be a ton of pictures posted from “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, so I’ve decided to take a less popular route and go with the puppygryph from “Yin Yang Yo!” in order to get things started.

While the creature is obviously based on the gryphon of ancient lore, it’s a new take on the concept and I believe that it’s enough to constitute it as being its own creature. Despite the fact that they’re fully capable of flight, they spend most of their time on the ground. They are also capable of verbal communication, but usually only speak to an owner that they particularly like. It takes them roughly three months to grow into their full size.

Feel free to post some pictures of other fictional species in animation, and if possible, post some informative information about the species like I did in the above example. You’re also more than welcome to post your thoughts on this puppygryph, or any of the other fictional species that will hopefully be posted in this thread.

Judging by the numerous shows that have creatures (Chaotic, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, W.I.T.C.H., American Dragon, Juniper Lee and any other fantasy show that has monsters.) there's going to be a lot of pictures.

I assume you’re talking about Appa; he isn’t a bison, per se, as he’s actually a sky bison. I don’t really know enough about him to write anything informative, despite the fact that I loved “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, but he would indeed count.

Is that a problem? There have been other threads that have had numerous pictures, such as the one about facial expressions. Besides, I don’t expect people to begin posting pictures of every single pok?mon, or anything of that sort. This thread is more about animals, which I made sure to mention in the thread’s introductory post. Regardless, you mentioned “Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends”, but I do not believe that the imaginary friends in that series would qualify as a species of animal.

Not really, just pointing it out.

Mudslugs range in size from a mouse to larger than a building depending how old they are. They're blind, but they move around by sense of smell and vibrations in the ground, as they can burrow and make their home underground and live in colonies.. They use long tendrils to pick up prey and devour them with a mouth found on the underside of their belly, provided they're larger than what they're trying to eat.

Sandpit is a meandering and living pit of quicksand that travels around deserts and wastelands. While it appears to be just a normal pit of quicksand, it can send out tentacles of sand to capture prey and pull it down inside it. It's insides look like a small cavern with the dried-out husks of its victims lining inside of its belly walls, which it absorbs life from to keep itself alive.

Shapeshifters are creatures who have both an monstrous animal form and a human form. Two we know of are Cedric, who's a snake shapeshifter, and Miranda, who's a tarantula shapeshifter. Miranda is younger, though, as her human form is that of a little girl who Cedric's is a full grown adult. They can morph between either form at will, but have no abilities in their human form, which is more for blending in and tricking their prey.

Saiyen from DBZ. Goku is a human/monkey from planet Vegeta and can throw beams outta his hand. Also Kilola from Inuyasha. That weird cat/sabretooth thing. Fake, but pretty cool!

Yakko, Wakko, and Dot Warner of Animaniacs are of an unknown species. I remember one short had Dr. Scratchensniff trying to figure out what they are and they broke out in song and pretending to be common species like dogs, cats, and even rabbits. But the end result was the same--Unknown!

Hippo-cow or Cow-hippos:

From the Avatar: TLAB episode The Headband:

From episode 5 of Macross Frontier:

Keep in mind this ep. of Macross Frontier would have already been in production when The Headband aired so it's just an odd coincidence.

I always thought that they were dogs, because I could of swore that in one episode the narrator said that Wakko was using his "canine-like insticts"

There's the Shmoo of "L'il Abner" comic strip fame, who became an animated character in the late 70s on the Hanna-Barbera animated "The New Shmoo", which soon became "Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo". Shmoo later got a part as Barney and Fred's partner in the "Bedrock Cops" segments of the early 80s "Flintstone Comedy Show".

They're the fictional species known as Warners.
Fictional species of the toon variety, like the Warners and Wooldor Sockbat, always confuse people. I guess it's because people want to associate a fictional species that they would recognize.

.....or somethin'.

What about Nights from journey into Dreams and go-go from Tinytunes?(I know Nights is not a from a cartoon show, but what the hell is he?

Nights is a humanoid. I don't know if we should be counting sentient beings as a "species".

As for Go-Go, he's the last Do-Do bird, hence his full name, Go-Go Do-Do.

BTW, it's Tiny Toons. Just sayin'....
