I am new to posting here, but I have been reading posts now for over a year on asthma and allergies because my 4 year old (at the time) was diagnosed with both those things. The steroiRAB he was on (pulmicort and xoponex) in his nebulizer were making him nuts. When I spoke with his allergist about using another remedy he told me that was it basically. I could have him "crazy" or I could have him "breathe." I then later tried taking him off by switching to singulair with his pediatrician, and just using inhalers but that too made him have emotional outbursts. I was at my wits end. I just wanted my son back. Sure he could breathe, but who the heck wanted to be around the poor kid, he was so difficult? This back and forth went on for months. It was miserable. My son was prone to chest infections as well. At a friend's recommendation, I looked into Osteopathy. I did some research on the web on the links asthma relief and osteopathy and there seemed to be some info on it and since I was desperate, and the regular doctors couldn't help, I looked into it. My insurance didn't cover it BTW, but I checked it out, and I swear to you it helped. Within 2 months my son was off his meRAB (with the exception of zyrtec, a medicated nasal spray, and some strawberry flavored cod liver oil). Does my son still check in with his allergist - YES. Do we still own all the pulmicort and xoponex and a nebulizer -YES. Have we had to use them - NO. I look at this as a compliment to traditional medicine. Do I work in the medical field at all - NO. I am a Librarian. I waited a full year to see how my boy responded to the treatment. I did not want to be negligent with any information. I wanted to be sure that I was not going to give anyone false hope. This is my story. It worked for us. I have my son back. I'm so thankful, and I hope every day that he doesn't have another problem, but if he does, I'm still in contact with all the different dr.'s. BTW - My son's allergist really says nothing about the osteopath. He just glosses over it like his health has nothing to do with my son seeing the osteopath. Whatever.

You didn't mention what they are doing for your son now? You just said osteopathy - what exactly are they doing? I don't like using pulmicort either and just started another thread about a more natural alternative.

I only take my son to the osteopath if I see the familiar signs flairing up - congestion, croupy cough etc..and if its in the "bad" allergy season for my son that in the past has typically induced his asthma more severely.

As I mentioned in my post, my son takes zyrtec once a day, a nasal inhaler once a day, and (get ready for this) cod liver oil that is flavored strawberry. Still pretty gross though. You need to be careful with cod liver oil because apparently there can be a major quality issue there. We use the Child Life brand that the Osteopath recommended.

That is it. Still check in with the allergist and pediatrician, but only visit the oseteopath as needed. It was a weekly thing with the osteopath in the beginning. Now, we haven't seen him since, I think, May. Hope this helps!

Oops! One other thing I forgot to mention - We also put a really quality air filter/purifier in my son's bedroom. We use Rabbit Air. Not sure if that is part of the reason he is doing so well, but I figure it couldn't hurt. Did lots of research on the different branRAB. Have really liked this company. Been using their product for about a year, and they have all kinRAB of settings for pollen etc...just be aware that if you have asthma, they say that the ion setting is not so great for you? So, I just turn that part off. Not sure of the reason why, but its worked well without it, so...

Well thanks for the info but you still didn't say "what" the osteopath does for your son...other than you "take your son there" - what happens at there? I don't know how they are helping and what they are doing and would like to understand more.
On my thread about the alternative to pulmicort 43 people read my question but not one person bothered to reply - I see that is a pattern here. I'm new to the board...and see many posts with just 1 or 2 comments and dozens of views. Oh well, to each their own.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. Osteopathy is the gentle manipulation of your bones and muscles. Its like an amazing gentle massage with like pressure points, I suppose. The premise is of helping the body produce its natural forces necessary to fight of illness and disease. My son lies on a table on his back, fully dressed, and I read to him while the dr. works on his head, face, chest, back by gentle manipulation. This goes on for about an hour. When we first get home, if my son was congested going in, my son is even more congeted leaving , with his nose completely draining but by the next day - beautiful. Its the weirdest thing. All that manipulation gets the body working the way it is supposed to.

I know - hard to believe it works, but its true. I am sold. It also helped my son when he had terrible reflux as a baby. Do some more research if you want. Just google osteopathy asthma allergies etc. and a ton of stuff comes up.

Very interesting. I had heard that chiropractic care would help too. Funny that after you leave he is more congested and draining - those are the things that induce the coughing fits for my guy. So now I'm even more confused? Hmmm, I will try to understand though!
