Basil with the Lord is just horrible. I feel for him so much because he has set himself up to look a fool. That "go away" into the phone is brilliant.
Another great little moment of agony, when Basil's fawning makes him look a fool, is at the Gourmet Night. Making smalltalk, he asks "How's your lovely daughter". Sybil leans across and says, just loud enough to be heard by everyone in the room, "She's dead", then leans back out again and leaves Basil humiliated. Along with Sybil trying to fill in with a terrible anecdote about a family get-together, those gourmet scenes are agony. Brilliant.
"A satisfied customer. We should have him stuffed". often quoted in my office.
