favorite stories from the "Treehouse of Horror" episodes

With Halloween coming up this weekend, I thought it'd be nice to start a thread discussing our favorite segments from The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horrors" episodes.

First off, I like all three segments from Treehouse of Horror V equally, but I think I like the one where the school cooks the children the best. I especially like the big closing number.

I also really like Homer3. I figure a lot of people like that... I CGI in that is amazing, even (or especially) if it is low-tech compared to today. And that was made around the time that computer animation was starting to become common, long before it got overrated.

I also like the segment where Bart Simpson learns he has an evil twin brother who's been chained up in the attic. Funny how Bart had never noticed his scar before. The ending is funny as well.

The segment from the third halloween special, in which Bart gets a Krusty doll, is also hilarious. I especially like the "that's good/that's bad" exchange between Homer and the shopkeeper, as well as what happens after the doll becomes good. And there are some funny lines... "This just in: Springfield's air is now only dangerous to kids and the elderly", "I was a fool for thinking anybody would buy nude photos of Whoopi Goldberg", and "Look! The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me!"

I also like the Bart twin one, but my favorite would have to be the Nightmare on Elm Street parody "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace". My favorite horror series is Elm Street.

Everything from Treehouse of Horror 5. From the Shining, to the Time Toaster, to the Soylent Green parody, everything had me on the floor laughing. Out of the 3, my favorite segment is Time and Punishment, if only for the absurd it can be at times, ranging from how normal the opening felt, to Homer using a rock and building something scientific, to Homer's wedding advice, to all those alternate futures.

The story based on "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. The mood is so different from the other segments, it's downright creepy in this one. And little Raven Bart is so cute.

"Nevermore."

"Why you little!"

The Shinning was their greatest film parody in the history of their running. The humor were priceless and a fine clear example of classic Simpsons.

Mr. and Mrs. Simpson is also a favorite of mine.

Good list (I can't believe I forgot about The Grand Pumpkin, I was just thinking about that the other day before starting this thread). But when you listed "Bad Dream House", I think you confused the ending with the one from the Kang and Kodos story. I don't recall Lisa beign blamed for the house committing suicide.

Yes, still great. And I just noticed that the first two segments from the first "Treehouse of Horror" end with Lisa making some kind of observation ("Instead of living with us, it chose to kill itself. I can't help but feel a little rejected", "There were monsters on that ship, and we were them").

Looking at this thread and one of the blogs (I think yours), it seems like many of us (well, many who have posted in this thread) agree that the entire "Treehouse of Horror V" is one of the best as a whole.

My favorite individual segments are:

Homer3...Alot of funny lines in this one...I love when everyone's trying to figure out where Homer is...

Marge: Do you see towels?....If you see towels, you're probably in the linen closet again ...

Homer : Just a sec....Nope...it's a place I've never been before....

Patty (or Selma...I forget which one ) : ...Ah!...the shower!

Homer : Shut up!

Reverend Lovejoy : Homer,do you see a light?

Homer: Yes!

Reverend Lovejoy : Move into the light,my son...

Homer (gets zapped): AUUGGHHH!!!

and it was also really cool to see Homer (and later Bart) in computer animation
*******
G-G-G-GHOST D-D-D DAD....This is one of those segments that makes me laugh every time I see it...

I love the exchange between Marge and Homer (who is a ghost, having died from eating broccoli)

Homer: MAAARRRGGGEEE SIIIIMMMPPPSONNN

Marge: Oh,Homie!...I thought I'd never see you again!

Homer: YYYOOOOUUU WEEERRRREE WRRROONNGGG MAAARRRGGGEEE DEAD WRRROOONNNGG!!

Marge: Do you really have to talk like that?

Homer:....No,not really....

and I also really loved the one with Homer and his time-traveling toaster (I think it's called "Time and Punishment")....especially when it looks like he's found his dream universe (well behaved kids, luxury car,Patty and Selma are dead),but runs off screaming when Marge doesn't know what a donut is...of course, the minute he leaves,Marge looks out the window and it turns out it rains donuts there :D.....

Wow, no mention of Dial "Z' for Zombies yet? I'm impressed. Personally my favorites are Nightmare at 20 1/2 Feet, The Homega Man, and Starship Poopers

I disliked the ending of that one (not a fan of "All Just A Dream" endings); it would have been awesomely dark (and ironic) to see vegetarian Lisa turned into what she hates the most: MEAT.

One of my favorites is where Homer sells his soul to devil Ned Flanders for a donut. I also liked when Ned Flanders reprised his Satanic role in "Heck House".

Lisa: Dad! you just killed zombie Flanders!

Homer: He was a zombie?

One of the best lines from the Treehouses, and

Homer: I can't kill, I'm eating

I like pretty much all of the segments from seasons 1-10. It was starting with "Treehouse of Horror X" that the episodes weren't as consistently good, with usually one (sometimes two) of the stories being duds in some fashion.

However, here are some stories from X and later that I still enjoy:

Treehouse of Horror X

"I Know What You Diddily-Iddily-Did": Good direction. I especially like the gag where everyone looks suspiciously at the Simpsons, and then it pans to Homer himself pointing ominously at the family.

Treehouse of Horror XI

"G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad": "I thought you angels could see everything!"
"No, you're thinking of Santa Claus."

Treehouse of Horror XII

"House of Whacks": Come on, who doesn't love a story about a house that is in love with the wife and plots to kill the husband?

Treehouse of Horror XIII

"Send in the Clones": Leave it to Homer to completely abuse a magical device for his own ends, then haplessly discard it (right where the clones could easily get to it and spread more havoc!). Good twist ending, too.

"The Fright to Creep and Scare Harms": A winner just for the Kaiser Wilhelm joke, although others are enjoyable as well. "What is this: Open mic night?"

Treehouse of Horror XIV

"Stop the World, I Want to Goof Off": "I'm gonna play naked basketball!"
"No, you're not."

Treehouse of Horror XV

"The Ned Zone": Shorts like this are why David Silverman rules at direction, with his snappy timing and good job at generating tension amidst the laughs.

"In the Belly of the Boss": "Well. That hurt like hell."

Treehouse of Horror XVI

"I've Grown a Costume on Your Face": "I'm a real witch."
"Hey, that's cheating!"
"BURN HER!!!...... gift certificate!"

Treehouse of Horror XVII

"The Day the Earth Looked Stupid": "Now they're playing the xylophone while bowling near an airport!" [Screw you.]

Treehouse of Horror XVIII

"Heck House": (ENVY!) "Oh, how I envy the crotchless!"

Treehouse of Horror XIX

"How to Get Ahead in Dead-vertising": The John Wayne commercial.

Treehouse of Horror XX

Not a particularly hilarious THOH, but I enjoyed its direction. It especially liked the first segment and its use of black and white.

Nice list boris. Wanted to add that i love the night of the dolphins episode from THOH XI, as it is the ULTIMATE lisa screw-up. She frees a dolphin, only to have them take over the town and force the residents of Springfield into the ocean.

Lenny: Mmmm. Alcohol and night swimming. It's a winning
combination!
[he's surrounded by dolphins swimming around him,
fins showing]

Oh-oh. Sharks! The assassins of the sea! [the
dolphins stick their heads out of water]

Oooh. You're not sharks. You're dolphins. The
clowns of the sea. [they begin striking him with
their noses]

Ow! Ow! Hey what's the gag?

also wanted to add that i loved the peter griffin reference in send in the clones from THOH XIII

some other THOH favs include,

I know what you
Diddily-Iddily-Did" from THOH X As werewolf flanders is
FUNNY! Especially when he eats homer at the end and you hear him after the screen fades to black.

Homer: Ha ha, eyes bigger than your stomach?

HΩmega Man from THOH VIII

Homer: Heloooo, earth to stupid guy! *punches him causing his skull to disentigrate*

and probably my favorite, "Lisa's nightmare" from THOH II which is an awesome play
on the monkey's paw myth.

Also wanted to mention THOH IX, for its "horror inspired" take on the opening (and my personal favorite THOH Introduction) As well as the segment "starship poopers" for involving jerry springer.

Yeah, I agree. Every THOH up to "Life's A Glitch, And Then You Die" is just perfect. Direction, writing, animation, voice acting, it's all classic Simpsons. It's kind of scattershot after that, but there are a lot of really funny ones sprinkled in there. Though I think XII and XIII are surprisingly strong ones, most THOH after X have one really good one, one boring segment, and one awful segment.

Maybe they would benefit by dropping it to two segments instead? It might help the weird pacing issues some segments suffer from.

I said this over at Nohomers a while ago, but it would've been awesome if "House of Whacks" had traded places with "The Island of Dr. Hibbert" so that all three segments of THOH XIII would've been great. I wasn't a big fan of "Hex and the City" and "Wiz Kids" in XII and "Dr. Hibbert" in XIII, outside of a few isolated jokes.

What I really liked about it was what followed Bart finding out it was just a dream: The families skin turns inside-out and then they sing a showtune. BTW was that Willie who joined them halfway through the number?
