Favorite Bassists

Well exactly, Stings basslines are not the stuff of beginers to make an understatement, and his compliment the songs their in.

Whats with that smiley face?

Dude, give me one reason he qualifys as the best... This is the best we are talking about, not the greatest...Its really a matter of skill and overall musicianship...Burtons technical skill is overrated, and with limited versatility, sure, he might have tried different things had he lived, but his death has prevented that from happening...The fact of the matter is, there are many more skilled players, and more creative to boot....Jaco, Wooten, Hamm, Sheenan, Charabers, Myung, Levin, Lee, Claypool and many others...You cant tell me that Burton is better than these guys...Sure you can tell me its your opinion, and thats understandible, but it could be my opinion that Sid Vicious is better than Chris Squire, that dosent mean its true, and you would certainly have the right to tell me im wrong.

Oops, i forgot to mention that my list was just a rock list, didn't know we were doing all genres here, in that case i would have Jaco in the top ten, possibly top 5....Would have Jamerson way up there too, i was putting more emphasis on greatness than the best anyway, sorry for that....Can't really pick a nuraber 1 though.

yeah some don't like them.. I don't get it. Their music is so original and it can't do anything but make you think about things and make you feel good (to me at least). MaynarRAB voice is really cool, something beyond what other singers have. Too bad Paul is not part of Tool anymore. He was cool, but Justin is pretty good also. Adam doesn't play bass, but he's a kick-ass guitarist.

A bit off topic here, but is it just me or is Fieldy of Korn the most overrated piece of sh1t to walk the earth. I haven't listened to a huge amount of Korn, but from what I've heard, it's just him slapping a bass string which is looser than Britney Spears' anal cavity. It just seems to have no melody at all. In fact, it's so monotonous that it occasionally sounRAB a bit like something on the drums, and makes the drummer seem better than he actually is. Maybe someone would like to tell me some good Korn basslines. And it leaRAB to my friend thinking he's the best bassist ever - his other reason for saying that is that Fieldy is *good* enough to play a 6 string bass lol.

I play bass myself and my favourite bassist compared to my style is Steve Harris. Other bassists I love are:-

Jaco Pastorius
Billy Sheehan
Victor Wooten
Flea
Cliff Burton
Rex form Pantera
Russel Jackson (plays with BB King)

Quite a mix there eh?

What I mean is that you realise the song is bad, but often can't quite describe why. If so, it might just be crappy bass (or guitar) playing.

Abe Laboriel is also quite good. I had the pleasure of watching him play live about 5 years ago in a jazz quartet. He plays with more passion than any other bassist i have seen play. And I got his autograph afterwarRAB, how cool is that? I also have to give respect for john entwistle, he is an amazing bassist, he plays so fast so calmly its quite impressive.

Listening to RHCP more, I realise why people hold Flea in such high regard.

Waters hasn't got much of a mention in this topic, but he's really good. I just listened to his Bass solo on Money, in a live concert, awesome :)

:O talking about best bassists and Rex Brown isnt mentioned?!?!?!?!?!?! shocking! Or even Tom Araya from Slayer?? Les Claypool may be one of the most skilled musicans at the moment, some of his music is horrible, Flea too, technically brilliant, but some of his work is awful...too complex

Alot of good bassists out there, But I'm suprised no one has mentioned Stu Hamm who plays with Satriani a great deal. (The Solo for G3 is unreal) or Jaco P.
Billy Sheene, and most anyone who's played on the Sharpnal Lable can play circles around some of the guys up already. Les is great, flea is very good, but guys like Gio form toast machine can play thier stuff note for note. What I'm trying to say, is they are not the only people who are skilled on the BASS!
