Favorite Bassists

Exacty, yeah he was a cool guy, but he wasn't a true musician, he was picked solely for his image, The Sex Pistols even admited that, he was a horrible bass player, he couldn't even play the simplest punk chorRAB, Lemmy from Motorhead and The Sex Pistols former bassist both tried to teach him the basics, but they both were quoted for saying he was a horrible student, he didn't even play on Never Mind the Bollocks despite being given credit, Steve Jones actualy played the bass parts, and at live shows his bass would be unamped and instead of actualy playing he was ordered to mimic it...He was THAT bad.

I still love The Sex Pistols though.

Just because my message was after yours doesn't mean I was specifically referring to you. I would have quoted your message.

Anyway, a lot of people haven't heard them. There are still people who only think of RHCP as the band who did Californication, Scar Tissue, Can't Stop, Fortune Faded and a few 'pop rock' hits. And they've probably only heard By the Way which was miserable compared to their other albums. I could understand people wondering what the hype about Flea is, if they've only heard, say By the Way.

Flea of the Chilli Peppers is the best basisst ever.
HanRAB down.

Few others deserve to be put in the same league and even fewer might be able to outplay him.

noone mentioned Geddy Lee from Rush? one of the best i think, and Sid Vicious??? Come on now, he could barely hold the bass let alone play it.

What are you talking about?...Burton is way more popular, primarly because of his death and because hes in a more popular band, not because he is a better bassist...Burton had barely been playing for over a decade, Harris has been playing for 3 decades.

for a minute there I thought you were selling me Micheal Anthony as a good bass player, and I was going to say, "Running with the devil has one F'ing note"

Sting does one note basslines too, big deal, if the song requires a one note bassline to make it work, so be it. Anthony could be very good if that was what the song needed. On Fire, Hot For Teacher and Jamies Cryin all has some decent bass. He isnt amazing or anything, neither is Sting, even though you once tried to convince me that he was.

Anyway, if dont you include all the classic Motown bassists like James Jamerson(who would own the list if you did.)the list would go something like this IMO.

1.Flea
2.John Entwhistle
3.Larry Graham
4.Geddy Lee
5.Les Claypool
6.Chris Squire...I can't believe he hasn't been mentioned already. :(
7.Jack Bruce
8.Bootsy Collins
9.Tony Levin
10.Cliff Burton
11.John Paul Jones
12.Paul Maccartney
13.Phil Lesh
14.Geezer Butler
15.Greg Lake
16.Stu Hamm
17.Jack Casady
18.Steve Harris
19.John Myung
20.Billy Sheenan

Honorable mentions to John Wetton, John Deacon, Mike Gordan, Oteil Burbridge, Billy Cox, Mike Watt, Mike Rutherford, Dirk Lance, Roger Waters, Trevor Bolder, Krist Novoselic...I might have commited bass sacrilage with that last one. :)

That's not TOO selfish then, as at least he didn't ruin the live shows with bad and audible playing. For many musicians, silence is the best thing they could offer.
