Family Guy - "We Love You Conrad" - Talkback [5/3]

Wow, I didn't really count that many cutaways in this episode. All of them were pretty good too, which is quite a feat in this season.

It's nice to see something come out of Jillian and Brian's relationship, even if he still got a bad end by losing both girls.

I'm pretty surprised the episode didn't completely bash The Hills and Lauren Conrad, although that final shot of her with worms was pretty funny.

My favorite part was definitely the Bill Cosby sex tape, and the amoutn of filler that goes into an episode of The Hills. Good stuff.

The reason why Meg is unpopular and gets dumped on so much is because she's so homely that no one wants to be around her, correct? If Meg were "cute", then FG's writers would have to come up with a different shtick for the character.

I have no idea why so many people hate the idea of doing something different with Meg. Fans react to the very idea as they would about removing the 'S' from Superman's chest. It's not like Meg being interesting would change the entire dynamic of the series or anything. Both Stewie and Lois started out one way and then developed in a different way, so why can't/shouldn't Meg? The writers are obviously satisfied with the way things are, but why is it OK for them to develop the shows' minor characters but not one of the characters in the central cast?

I don't really care or anything, but I do wonder why so many fans are against such an idea.

Some of us actually think the Meg bashing is funny. Simple as that.

There are people out there who don't get attached to cartoon characters to the point where they're offended by a fictional character getting trashed all the time. IMHO Meg deserves it for being such a one-dimensional whiny little brat.

Actually, according to the commentary with Barrymore, it went like this: SHE came to THEM, wanting to be a character REALLY badly, and they gave her Jillian. That's actually not far off from what you said, but you made it up.

Yeah, it's an old cartoon convention that shouldn't be taken seriously. Cartoon animals have been flirting with human women for decades and no one has cared until Brian.

But who MADE her one-dimensional? What irritates me most is, this is the way bullies see people, and this show encourages that kind of thinking -- to see human beings as doormats and punching bags. And you have to admit it's even worse when it's your own daughter.

To reiterate what I said earlier; I'm neither offended nor put-off by the Meg bashing jokes, and I certainly have no emotional attachment to the character, as Meg is barely characterized enough for me to care about her in that sense. I was merely curious as to why so many Family Guy fans are vehemently against the notion of Meg being anything better or different than what she is now. I suppose this can attributed to FG fans feeling that nothing is broken, and so there's no need to fix it.

However, I still contend that if Meg isn't very interesting, it's only because FG's writers don't make her very interesting. It's silly to fault the character for her flaws when that fault lies with her creators.

I said, I think I heard SOME of them talk about it. I never said, ALL of them watch it. Besides, I asked around out of curiosity and as it turns out they ALL talk to each other on the phone while watching AI and DWTS, which seems weird to me. And yes, I can confirm that ONE of them watches ROL, and when asked why she replied, I like it when the girls fight over that washed up wuss rocker.

So there you have it. And since we are way off topic I will make this my last post in this FG thread.

Didn't you listen to what Peter said at the end of the FCC episode? Taking life notions from a cartoon isn't something you should actually be doing.

If Brian were able to tell the truth to Jillian, she wouldn't even get it, and then Brian would actually end up yelling at her for each time she mispronounced something, and telling her that she is so STUUUPID, that she makes OPIE smarter than her, and it would have a moment of Smart Opie, who speaks good english! It would end with her groom breaking up with her for her stupidity, and her crying, because she realizes that she's stupid - Moreso than Peter's retardedness! It would be just like that time on The Simpsons, when Grampa went to Branson, Missouri, just to tell the girl who was loving him for being able to drive that his family was right! She's a HOOTCHIE, HOOTCHIE, HOOTCHIE!

Bye,Bye Birdie FTW!

Funfact: Conrad Birdie is actually a parody of Conway Twitty and Elvis Presley.

Can somebody explain to why it's a-okay for everyone on Family Guy to be as violent and amoral as they want to be, but when they make fun of Meg, i'm supposed to feel bad? I can understand a gag getting old and annoying, but as far as the sympathy thing goes,...no.

They could easily make her a bit more interesting, ala Hayley on American Dad, but they just want her to be a unlikeable punching bag. I actually find it kind of interesting seeing as the majority of cartoon women are beautiful and hyper capable.

Frankly, I'm not losing sleep over it and it doesn't make or break the show for me.

Overall, didn't care about this episode.
