Family Guy - "Trading Places" - Talkback [3/20]

I didn't even get that reference. Then again, I barely get any of the references in this show.

What was that reference anyway?

Anyway, things got intense at the end, but it was still a pretty funny episode.

It involved Peter's idea of "male high school student" consisting of him armed with a shotgun, plotting to gun down the students that picked on him.

Pretty weak episode, tonight. Note to Family Guy writers: more funny and bizarre, less preachy and cliche.

Even minus the steam shovel gag this was still overall a horrible episode. They kind of just forgot about doing the whole switch plot and then just had it become a Chris is stressed out plot without even trying to have Meg learn the same lesson (not to mention the whole "you know it's hard being an adult/kid" plot came from nowhere. Chris had no good reason to steal the dirtbike, and they didn't even try doing any jokes with either Meg or Chris in the grown up roles besides thinking Meg would cook badly. And then there's the "everything goes back to normal" ending. Uh from what I remember of the Mr. Saturday Knight Commentary wasn't one of the things they wanted to explore more was Peter going through different jobs after he lost his toy making job? How come he's kept the same job at the brewery if they don't even both doing anything funny with the brewery anymore? What do they just like using Angela and think that if she's not at the brewery they can't use her anymore, even though they still could? Honestly this would of been just enough reason for Peter to lose his job and actually getting another job or can they only do joke other jobs now?

So yeah very lackluster epiosde. Besides Carter wanting the dirtbike to hurt Peter, how Peter tricked Mayor West, Stewie wanting to swtich places with Brian and then forgetting if they did or not, and Dr. Hartman at the end, this was actually probably the worst episode of the season. Which is espiecally sad since the premise called for much better treatment then they delievered.

I did have a few laughs in tonight's episode, with the bits about Stewie saying how messed up the family was, Dr. Hartman in general, Peter being a sketch artist for the police, and the parts with Peter in High School. Who would have thought that Meg was an excellent chef? But I will say that this episode was pretty weak one. I might change my mind when I rewatch it tomorrow on Hulu and get a better feel for it.

I normally don't have the same intense feeling of disappointment that most of the other forum goers do with Family Guy episodes but this episode was very lackluster in its first half. To it's credit Chris have an adult breakdown moment was pure awesome and Seth Green's voice acting just hit it out the ballpark and did redeem the episode, but I kind of wish the went farther with the parents in high school parts as it would have made the episode more balanced instead of exclusively focusing on Chris towards the end.

O-chan

I think that I may have chose the wrong word to describe the final act (more specifically, Chris' adult breakdown and the lesson about how life sucks no matter what age you are). I think "dramatic" is probably the better choice of wording here.

The first two acts were pretty good, even though nothing was terribly funny. The third act was a bit weak. They petered out on Meg's part of the switchup.

The story was nothing original, and the humor was so-so. Overall, I will take an average episode over annoyingly awful stuff like Brian becoming Republican and any Herbert stories.

I admit that I'm not a Family guy fan but occasionally I try to watch the show. I was pretty typically unimpressed with everything but I turned it off after the Colombine gag. I thought that was WAAAY out of line, even for Family Guy. I'm not a person who gets easily offended but that was just completely inappropriate. I mean seriously WTF? people died tragically and Family Guy aims to score a cheap laugh off of it?!

Disgusting.

Yeah, I think my main beef with shock value jokes (and not just FG's, but comedy shows in general) is that they're used more as a crutch than anything else.

Sadly, Family Guy thrives on this. They are known to make jokes about horrible events like 9/11 and other things. I tend to ignore jokes lke that, but some of them go a little too far. Anyway, I tuned in today, pretty bland episode I must say, it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be.

Well, I must be in the minority but I found tonight's episode completely hilarious. A bit more slow paced than usual episodes, but I laughed at every gag they threw out and I found the role swapping pretty amusing to watch.

I especially loved when Peter sketched out the criminal and it later robbed Chris after work. Didn't see it coming at all. Episode did end rather abruptly, but Dr. Hartman's closing comment was pretty clever.
