This episode had a lot of potential. It was actually an attempt at a somewhat new style of comedy for Family Guy, really focusing on one running gag instead of cramming a million gags into an episode (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something they've done for six years).
But unfortunately.
The timing was HORRRRRRRRRRRRRR
ibble
!
Peter's obsession with the song was interesting, it was fresh, and it had potential to be a great running gag. And I'm sure plenty of people will turn it into a meme that I'll have mixed feelings about due to its questionable origins. But the timing just killed it, 90% of the time. There were a few scenes, later in the episode, where it was funny. Another good example was when he woke Lois up with it. But the establishment of the gag was, overall, a misfire. They seemed to have no sense for when to end each scene, or how to string the scenes together in a way that made comedic sense, or how much of the song was required for the gag to work in each iteration. And so it was like, I think that's funny, but I'm not laughing. Why?
Then of course there was the elephant in the room... Jesus. I'd rate that part of the episode a mildly pleased "meh". It made for some good stuff, some "that's kind of offensive and yet not all that funny" stuff, overall more funny and memorable than the average new FG episode. Of course there was another Bush-bashing joke here, but I actually thought it was well placed, if still a bit lacking in the laugh department. The point of the joke wasn't just "BUSH BAD, REPUBLICANS BAD" -- it tied into the plot for a fun little twist.
My favorite part of the episode was the Dane Cook scene, particularly the kid saying "He's on the internet and I'm in college! HA HA HA HA HA!" I mean, that's essentially the entire success story of Ebaum'sworld.com and, well, CollegeHumor.com.
EDIT: I also liked the crime show spoof a lot. Really I didn't hate this episode as much as it sounds like, but I'm just frustrated at how they botched a key part of it.
