Family Guy - "I Dream of Jesus" - Talkback [10/5]

With the strike problems and the hold-up, I wouldn't be surprised if this episode was written in early 2007. (the Moviefone gag raises this idea as well)...

Six combined minutes? It was good and the song was dumb enough to make it work. If it was six uninterrupted minutes it would have been a problem. Besides, all reports of the rumor specifically used the word "cutaway." Cutaways are uninterrupted.

The thing is, the episode was scheduled to air around the time Reeves died, and it's pretty obvious who the writers were trying to make fun of. The episode actually wasn't that bad regardless, but that doesn't make it any less out-of-date.

So without getting too religious in here, what did everyone think of the concept of Jesus sinning? Or more generally, the episode's portrayal of Jesus, period? I was sure that would've been a big topic in this episode thread, but instead we're debating what the six minute cutaway supposedly was. :p

I think everyone (at Comic Con) saw the Surfing Bird gags back-to-back-to-back as a "clip", and thought it was a cutaway since there was no plot they could tie it to. I wish someone would shed light on this...

That bird joke turned out better then you'd think it would. It was a very overplayed joke and if they use it more then 20 seconds in a different ep it'll kill it. But I like that used different contexts of the joke never really playing the whole song through more then once, showing the extent of Peters obsession with it. The Office Space bit could've been animated more like the scene from the movie, at least ad some trees, it was pretty plain.
I laughed in the ep, I frankly like seeing Peter as the center of attention then those Brain/Stewie relationship stuff. Sometimes the eps seem strong when Peter is the main focus.

I expected to be offended by this episode, but I wasn't. Jesus appears, sure, but they barely prick theology. That was probably Seth's intention.

I used to like that song....

And did anyone else find Peters "Aids vs. Polio" comment at the begining of the episode surprising? I expected it to be big news...

I haven't been a fan of the newer episodes of Family Guy for a while, but this one was pretty good. Mademe laugh a lot, I liked how Stewie and Brian stole Peters record and than Stewie trying to stop Peter from singing in the end LOL. But yah good episode :D

This episode had a lot of potential. It was actually an attempt at a somewhat new style of comedy for Family Guy, really focusing on one running gag instead of cramming a million gags into an episode (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something they've done for six years).

But unfortunately.

The timing was HORRRRRRRRRRRRRR

ibble
!

Peter's obsession with the song was interesting, it was fresh, and it had potential to be a great running gag. And I'm sure plenty of people will turn it into a meme that I'll have mixed feelings about due to its questionable origins. But the timing just killed it, 90% of the time. There were a few scenes, later in the episode, where it was funny. Another good example was when he woke Lois up with it. But the establishment of the gag was, overall, a misfire. They seemed to have no sense for when to end each scene, or how to string the scenes together in a way that made comedic sense, or how much of the song was required for the gag to work in each iteration. And so it was like, I think that's funny, but I'm not laughing. Why?

Then of course there was the elephant in the room... Jesus. I'd rate that part of the episode a mildly pleased "meh". It made for some good stuff, some "that's kind of offensive and yet not all that funny" stuff, overall more funny and memorable than the average new FG episode. Of course there was another Bush-bashing joke here, but I actually thought it was well placed, if still a bit lacking in the laugh department. The point of the joke wasn't just "BUSH BAD, REPUBLICANS BAD" -- it tied into the plot for a fun little twist.

My favorite part of the episode was the Dane Cook scene, particularly the kid saying "He's on the internet and I'm in college! HA HA HA HA HA!" I mean, that's essentially the entire success story of Ebaum'sworld.com and, well, CollegeHumor.com.

EDIT: I also liked the crime show spoof a lot. Really I didn't hate this episode as much as it sounds like, but I'm just frustrated at how they botched a key part of it.

Yeah, this one was very well done, because of the Bird is the Word running gag...I swear I just started smiling everytime he started singing and dancing to it, mostly because it was cute seeing Peter enjoy something so much to the point of fanboyism.

"Chris, polio was like the AIDS of the 50's, except the people that had polio weren't going to hell."

I LOL'd, I admit..and I am going to hell for it.
