Family Guy - "Family Gay" - Talkback [3/8]

This episode was pretty awful.
I'm starting to grow a disliking towards Family Guy.
I mean the first few seasons of Family Guy (before its cancellation) were so different compared to the latter seasons after they brought it back.

Dissapointment. Let's just leave it at that. :sad:
 
While it wasn't executed exactly the same, the James Bond gag, which had a similar kind of premise, was done better in The Critic.

"Maybe we should just cuddle."
"Cuddle my ah-ss!"
"That's sexual harassment, and I don't have to take it!"
"James Bond will return in Dr. No Means No."

Look at the difference. The animation is very stiff on the newer eps. (Basically it's only their mouth being animated lol) Also they keep bringing back one-shot characters from the Pre-Season 4 eps. (Herbert, Ernie the Chicken, etc.) The songs aren't that great anymore either (They keep using random songs from the 1980s that my parents barely know about...).
 
Yep. Call me a fan the first 3 seasons (most of the 4th season was good, too), and after a few season 5 episodes, I literally gave up on this series.
 
There were some parts I thought were really funny but as a whole this isn't going to be an episode that's going to hold up to repeat viewings for me.

However, I've felt that this season in general has been pretty strong so hopefully the next few episodes will be better.
 
You know, I would think Brian would say that this would be his best chance EVER to finally take a swing at Lois, with Peter being completely out of the way.
 
Wow. I can really see the difference with STILL PICTURES.

And I really do not see why everyone feels the need to bash Herbert. He's a pedophile, yes. But that is his character. Does anyone say the same thing about Quagmire trying to rape women? Hey let's change Cleveland to an Asian man for an episode! Herbert's character is that he's a creepy old pedophile. I don't see how he is a one-shot character. Ernie the Chicken on the other hand, is a one-shot character. His whole purpose is to cut away from the story for almost half the act and fight with Peter.

Herbert on the other hand, pops up for like a second and says one line and people are all over him with "Oh god not Herbert!" I'm not saying he's my favorite character but from what I can gather from him, some jokes are a little out of line but I do feel he cares about Chris, and even though he's a pedophile, I don't think he would do anything to harm Chris.
 
Yeah I was going to say the same thing. I'll admit that while the show definitely suffers from "talking head syndrome" a lot of the time, I actually really like the way the characters look now, much more than in the first couple of seasons. They've nailed the character designs to such an extent that even in repose I think Peter and Stewie (to name just two examples) are hilarious. You can put Peter in a variety of situations, costumes and gags and (IMHO) it will still be funny simply because it's Peter. This isn't always the case, but for me it often is. There is something about Peter's design (the half-lidded eyes, giant neck area and smug smile) that just works for me and they've tweaked his design just enough over the years to make Peter funny in and of himself.

I have no problem with Herbert, especially since it seems they're giving the character a bit of a rest lately. He no longer pops up in every single episode. There was a point a while back where I was tiring of him, but I have no problem with him now.

I had no problem with the Giant Chicken until his last appearance. 5+ minutes was way too long for that fight and it dragged down what was already a pretty bland episode. I'm at the point where I avoid that one now in reruns. I do fear that the next time we see this guy that the fight will be even longer. I'm sure he'll be back eventually and if he does come back FOX would be wise not to advertise it this time.
 
Well, uh...

What can I say? There were some funny parts of the episode, a lot having to do with the horse... but I couldn't help but be a little uncomfortable with how hard they were shoveling the gay stereotypes on.

I mean, I'm glad they went out of their way to say "being gay is OK" and I've always supported the idea that homosexuality was genetic, but it was all "I'm gay/You make me feel so gay/We're GAY GAY GAY" and "For the love of penis/Penis there, penis here, penis penis in my--"... Seriously. They don't have all the black characters talking jive, eating KFC, growing watermelon, rapping and living in bad neighborhoods.
 
I thought this episode was pretty funny, even thought it was in bad taste, and the show handles the "Staus Quo Is God trope" really badly.
 
That's not the problem either. I agree that the old seasons' visual style has some charm to it, but this show has really never had good animation or artwork. And the timing of the animation now is really the same as it's always been. (For example, they're still good at doing those quick pratfalls, though the problem with those is just that they're getting old.) The Simpsons, on the other hand, has the problem you're talking about.

No, my friends, I'm afraid the problem is simply bad writing, directing, and editing. Which is quite a problem.
