Family Guy - "Family Gay" - Talkback [3/8]

This episode was both good and bad. All of the Stewie scenes were very funny (like when he complains about Peter acting gay outside of the bedroom, points out that he doens't bring his heterosexuality into peoples faces, and Brain comments how true that is), the horse, the return of Herbert, the straight camp scenes, and the reference to Blazing Saddles. However, some of the gay gags made me feel uneasy. It was a bit painful to watch the gay gene wear off on Peter during the middle of an 11-way (I know, we didn't actually see it), and the listing of horses named after cancled Fox shows was both funny and too unneccessarily long (I noticed another long sequence afterwards that showed a speaker as words were said... I wonder if that was a way to save money, with one image and a lot of dialogue).

So, in other words, I don't know how to feel about this episode.

This episode was really good. It flowed very well as it went from the brain dead horse, to the medical testing, to Peter bein Gay for 2.5 weeks. This was a very enjoyable episode to watch because they didn't fill it with long filler clips, or long musicals, or anying annoy of the sort. The jokes were short and to the point, and it turned out to be a very funny episode.

5/5

That's one of the disadvantages of Family Guy's method. When the humor is dependent on the individual gags, and not the characters or their personalities, it's much harder to stay consistently funny and the hit-and-miss ratio starts to even out.

Even though South Park has a lot of vices, none of the post-revival FG episodes can really hold up to repeat viewings the way Casa Bonita, Good Times with Weapons, the Pandemic two-parter, or Woodland Critter Christmas can.

Not to mention Seth McFarlane's extreme liberal political slant becoming increasingly a part of the show's humor. At least South Park made both Obama and McCain (and said supporters/campaigns) look equally silly. I highly doubt Family Guy would do the same (McCain's already been pretty much declared a Nazi on the show as it is.)

I'm a liberal, but I'll agree the show has gotten too extreme in its views. Brian, a once lovable character, has become annoying lately as a result.

Overall I'd say this was an average episode. Luckily there's always a few moments in Family Guy that make me laugh even if the episode itself wasn't that great. Tonight those moments were pretty much everything with the horse, Lois fanservice :D,Dragon's Lair and the clown rape bit. So wrong, yet so funny. Usually with Family Guy I like it more when I watch it the second time the next day. But for now I'll just say it was an average episode with just enough laughs to keep me entertained for the half hour and that works for me. 3/5
