Family Guy - "Excellence in Broadcasting" - Talkback [10/3]

The HD opening was a little odd, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I loved the whole "everything on Fox News becomes a lie" bit and the song but other than that this was an average episode.


I believe the Libertarian party has parts of both sides but I'm not one so I can't confirm.
 
I'm surprised...they actually got by with a really, really subtle--yet pretty major--attack on the "Left" here when Rush Limbaugh told Brian that his auctions towards Pelosi were not of that of a Conservative, but a Liberal.

Either Seth MacFarlane totally missed that, or intentionally he "leveled the playing field" in a really subtle way.

I confess: after a crack Seth MacFarlane made about South Park, I think he's generally a talentless hack now, but I have to give him some credit as he made a really good point in the episode....when he said that people are just turning on the party in power now cause it's the popular thing to do, and it has nothing to do with whether anyone actually understands what each side claims to represent.

I love that! I've actually been bringing a similar argument to several Objectivist forums to explain my perspective on it, and I keep getting attacked for being "negative".

100% correct.

Rather than actually--y'know--improving the products we make and letting them sell themselves, we instead just complain and whine that jobs are going overseas. Go figure..
 
How is Seth talentless? I still don't understand how, just because his shows have a undertone of Liberalism, he could be considered talentless. He's a very good voice actor, a pretty good writer/producer, and a decent cartoonist.

Fox apparently agrees with this assumption that he's talented, otherwise they wouldn't have paid him $100 million to keep his shows on their network until 2012. And, unless Seth and his production team decide not to renew the contracts, he'll likely continue to exercise his talent of producing these shows past that time.
 
As a follow up to last weeks amazing episode, this was pretty much a let down. Nice to see they acknowledged past events, but this episode could've benefited from a B-plot. Brian isn't an interesting enough character to carry an entire episode. We didn't even get that many stupid Peter gags. The humor was much more dry than anything else.

Rush Limbaugh's character was the saving grace in this episode though. He was the straight man to Brian bandwagoning, and he wasn't shown off to be maniacal or stupid. Seeing the episode end with him transforming into an eagle was pretty amusing.
 
Note that Stewie did not mention the show he was putting down specifically. They were counting on something terrible dying a dog's death so they could put a graphic of it in during post-production.


He must've backed out....I'm assuming he would have appeared at the headquarters.
 
Awesome/hilarious episode,

The highlights:
The Brady Bunch gag was funny
I love the new high definition opening.
Ollie's "she's dead" line was funny/marvelous, his best lines always crack me up, hahahaha:D.
Nice with Tom mentioning the information about Diane's murder.
Joyce Kinney, Diane's replacement is so hot.
Peter being the drunken driver killing the two missing children was funny, hahahaha.
Chris mentioning Fred Savage last season was nice.
Brian and the paper bag was funny.
Rush Limbaugh and his character was handled awesome which it's nice that he's not a crazy lunatic.
Rush saving Brian by beating up the Multi-Racial T.V. Gang was amazing!!!!!!
Dwight's voice from The Office and Stewie's lines about it was hilarious, hahahaha, it's my top favorite comedy ever:D:p.
Brian changing his political views from Rush won't last long, hehehe
Stan Smith's little appearance was epic, I hope to see more American Dad! cameos, hehehe.
The Rush Limbaugh/George Bush chemistry was hilarious by making George act like a kid, hahahahaha.
The Scooby Doo parody was awesome with the Harlem Globetrotters in it and which I like Hot Dog, hahahaha:D:p.
Peter switching sides on the Lois/Rush argument was funny.
The musical number was amazing like Total Drama World Tour's along with the return of Chuck Norris and his chin fist, hahahaha.
Brian moving out with Rush won't end well.
Stewie mentioning Sons Of Tucson as FOX's bad idea was funny, but I'll miss that comedy though.
The American appliances breaking along with the mooing cat was hilarious, hahahaha.
Brian wanting to kill Nancy Pelosi was so funny, hahahaha, he's become psychopathic like Stewie on that scene.
Rush saving Brian to get him back to his old annoying liberal self was brilliant.
Rush turning into a bald eagle was a nice beautiful ending.

Rush Limbaugh and Rainn Wilson(Dwight from The Office) were great in the guest star roles in the new season.
 
Just as I expected... this was a pretty weak follow-up to last week's episode.

Despite that, however, I will give it credit for turning out better than I thought it would. Like him or hate him, Rush Limbaugh was pretty funny in this episode. He had his share of good bits. The song was also quite entertaining (even if was left-wing biased, which I thought this episode was supposed to the exact opposite of), and a few of the random off-topic jokes were pretty funny (I enjoyed the shot at Sons of Tucson).

Still... this episode had it's obvious flaws. You could tell the whole thing with Brian was heavily forced. It's almost like he was having his teeth pulled the entire time. Lois also got on my nerves a LOT in this episode; since when is she as left-wing as Brian? I remember her actually making fun of Brian about his political views a couple of times in the past, but now, she seems to be in full agreement with "liberal Brian", so to speak. I know Family Guy was never one for canonicity, but still... little stuff like this gets to me.

Like I said; this wasn't a great episode by any means, and definitely was a step down in comparison to last week. That being said, it still exceeded my expectations. I thought it would have turned out much worse, but it had it's decent moments.
 
Too bad Seth steals all his melodies straight from classic Broadway musicals that no fratboy has ever seen. Might've worked with a bomb like "Take Me Along" (FCC Song)... but "How to Succeed in Business"? Nice. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGhTr8lDCV0)

Decent ep, though the "fair fight" idea was really stretched. Clearly Limbaugh has a huge sense of humor because he got more of his message out in the Star Wars special than here. Everything was a back-handed compliment, to the point of slander. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but like someone said earlier, clearly the writing staff couldn't find it in there hearts to say anything truly decent about conservatism. And I doubt that bothered Seth. (btw, I'm not republican, at all, just observing)
 
aside from doing the routine "let's get as possibly close to a sex joke as we can, and then throw in some lame pop culture reference to avoid censorship" over and over again, he had the nerve to criticize Trey & Matt over the Muhammed situation with the episode "200"; basically he pretty much said "ya shouldn't go there guys; gotta see if the joke is worth the controversy".

Excuse me, but the whole point of being a comedy genius--save for a few truly talented legends--is to push the envelope. George Carlin and Lenny Bruce both got arrested for doing very controversial stand-up routines.

Trey & Matt push the envelope, and they're hilarious when they do it; I mean...they do loads of latrine humor, but they're so smart in their execution, it's not "low-brow" at all.

Seth MacFarlane doesn't have any of that working in his favor at all.
 
I lasted about eight minutes into the show and then I decided this was not going to work for me so I changed the station. I am not really sure what the thought process here was, but it did not make for a funny episode, IMO.
 
This was...not too bad, but, being the kind of person who doesn't know much about politics may have a different experience on this one.

Sure, some gags were funny, such as Stan Smith's cameo, the Scooby-Doo parody and the Sons of Tucson joke, but I feel that this would be the kind of episode that would be placed in the middle of the season.
 
This episode just left me a bit bored and uncaring, honestly. I'm not much of a politics guy, just watching Brian sprint to the other end of the political spectrum and back in half an hour wasn't fun.

I do give the show credit for the 'Sons of Tucson' gag and the Stan Smith appearance.

Overall, it's just an okay episode. Nothing really bad, but at the same time, I don't know if I could sit through another viewing of this episode. Only disappointment of the night, sad to say.
 
Yep! Gotta love those Scooby-Doo parodies. I still find it funny no matter how many times they do it. "I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for you meddling republicans."

Yeah. I was surprised that the last ep was cannon. I was thinking Tom and Diane would be anchoring the news as if nothing happened.

The WS opening might take some time to get used to. I didn't notice any big differences except for the way the screen was, I'll have to look for Joe and Quagmire next time.
 
Me not being a fan of politics made this episode boring to me. My favorite parts were Rush beating up the gang that jumped Brian and the Stan Smith cameo. Hope next week is better.
 
A few good jokes aside, I didn't think this episode was that great. Then again, Brian is my least favorite character, and this didn't make me like him any more. I did like Lois pointing out that he's a contrarian and will argue for the underdog just for the sake of it.
