Exactly. If nothing else, coming back after a longish break means that you've got a nice backlog of good stuff to work through. Plus, being slightly behind the curve can make it easier to get stuff on the cheap.
The same thing happened to me with comic books. I was spending far too much on comics every week, but for whatever reason I just wasn't feeling it. I'd head over to the comics board and piss and moan about how the writers were ruining my favorite characters, and eventually it was like, "Why am I even putting myself through this?" So when I needed to start saving up for a big trip, the first expense I cut was my comic budget. Cold turkey-- no more weekly trip to the comic store. And when I got back, there were just too many other good uses for that money, so I didn't resume my habit.
A couple years later, I'm at the library looking for some light reading, so I check out the first couple volumes of Sandman. And they've got that great big complete collection of Bone, I'll check that out. And then later, some Fables and Y: The Last Man. But the library doesn't have the whole series, so of course I have to head to the bookstore. And while I'm there, I notice that the Dragon Ball manga is dirt cheap in those big three-volume volumes. And ooh, Watchmen, I've always heard that's good. And I liked the anime of Genshiken, maybe I'll check out the manga. And I did always mean to read the real ending of Death Note, and there's new Berserk out, and, ooh! the Gantz manga is finally out!
And next thing you know, between some of the slightly more indie / artsy and/or older Western stuff and all that manga, I'm reading more comics than ever-- and spending less money than when I was making a weekly trip to the comics story to pick up single-issues of a bunch of superhero stuff that I was just buying out of loyalty and not really enjoying.
So there's no reason to try and force it. If something interests you, watch it. If it doesn't, don't. There's just too much good stuff out there to waste your time with something you're not really into.
