Falling out of Anime

Mr. Hello

I don't know about you guys and girls out there, but as of late, I feel as if I'm beginning to slip out of anime. I don't know what it is, but I really want to get back in it with a passion. I've caught a few titles here and there on tv and the internet, but I feel so underwhelmed.

Does anyone know how to get out of an anime slump?

Interests will come and go. Most often, you'll just need a break to try new things. I think trying to force yourself back into watching stuff will only make things worse. Take a break and try other interests. You'll soon come back refreshed and renewed....and if you don't, that's just the way your interest goes.

Eh, I've never been in love with anime as a whole. I like several shows that are animes but never watched a show simply because its an anime. So your feelings quite normal.

Exactly. If nothing else, coming back after a longish break means that you've got a nice backlog of good stuff to work through. Plus, being slightly behind the curve can make it easier to get stuff on the cheap.

The same thing happened to me with comic books. I was spending far too much on comics every week, but for whatever reason I just wasn't feeling it. I'd head over to the comics board and piss and moan about how the writers were ruining my favorite characters, and eventually it was like, "Why am I even putting myself through this?" So when I needed to start saving up for a big trip, the first expense I cut was my comic budget. Cold turkey-- no more weekly trip to the comic store. And when I got back, there were just too many other good uses for that money, so I didn't resume my habit.

A couple years later, I'm at the library looking for some light reading, so I check out the first couple volumes of Sandman. And they've got that great big complete collection of Bone, I'll check that out. And then later, some Fables and Y: The Last Man. But the library doesn't have the whole series, so of course I have to head to the bookstore. And while I'm there, I notice that the Dragon Ball manga is dirt cheap in those big three-volume volumes. And ooh, Watchmen, I've always heard that's good. And I liked the anime of Genshiken, maybe I'll check out the manga. And I did always mean to read the real ending of Death Note, and there's new Berserk out, and, ooh! the Gantz manga is finally out!

And next thing you know, between some of the slightly more indie / artsy and/or older Western stuff and all that manga, I'm reading more comics than ever-- and spending less money than when I was making a weekly trip to the comics story to pick up single-issues of a bunch of superhero stuff that I was just buying out of loyalty and not really enjoying.

So there's no reason to try and force it. If something interests you, watch it. If it doesn't, don't. There's just too much good stuff out there to waste your time with something you're not really into.

My biggest thing for not being into anime as of now, is that i got tired of it. Ive got stuff on backlog i need to watch, but i just dont feel like it/forget about it.

Right now, i play video games/read/watch old school nick cartoons. And the anime i do like, i just stick to that. I guess one big thing for me is when i watched something that "everyone loved". That was Azumanga Daioh. I saw like 10 ep last year, and after that i felt it was a waste of time. That show did nothing for me, and i realized where i stood at on my interest. I got tired of people saying "FLCL is the best ever, nah uh, Naruto, no this and this" and i just got sick and tired of it.

I guess when people shove down the "latest thing" down your throat, its like "eh, why bother." Its like all the so called "anime fans" today just know Shojen Jump, naruto and one peice and thats it. Theres a vast vast VAST anime list up the wazzo, and they just want whats feed to them in america.

Just stick to what you like in anime. Dont go and watch things that "other people" tell you to, just watch what your are interested in. Then go against the grain and say what you like is the best anime ever, thats a diff tune for the others to hear...

Watching a film/tv show based solely on the genre/format it's in is never a good idea.

I still am stunned that there are those out there who claim they like every show they've ever seen. They either have had great luck and only watched a handful of conveniently high quality shows, or they have little or no standarRAB.

Any genre/format of art (film/television/animation/literature/music) has a fair balance of high quality work within a sea of junk.

"burnout" only happens when one overindulges and watches too many mediocre to horrible shows/films.

Trust me, you're not alone in this "slipping out of anime," phase.

I used to be addicted to anime. But then, about a year ago, I slowly started to lose interest when I found that many new shows, which I tried, were just not grabbing my interest. I kept trying to find new anime to watch, but I just couldn't get into anything. So, I decided to take a break from anime, and just focus more on other stuff that I liked, such as playing video games and reading books.

Now, as of the last couple of months, I have slowly started to regain some of my interest in watching new anime shows. In fact, I probably wouldn't be here, on the Toon Zone anime forum, if I never took a break from anime, as I probably would have ended up losing all of my interest in trying out any new anime, had I not decided to spend more of my time on other things.

Yeah, even when I was a big anime fan, I never really watched something only because it was an anime. I would watch it if it had a plot that interested me, if it had lots of cool looking action, and/or if it was of some genre that interested me, but I never just watched a show simply because it was an anime, even if it was recommended to me by other people. I would always need some reason as to why an anime show was entertaining enough to be worth my time.

To be honest, most anime is designed to appeal to people roughly between 14 and 18, or a bit younger. As you get older, you are inevitably going to find less and less of the majority of the product out there appealing. It just means you'll get more selective about what you watch, and anything uninteresting enough to get backlogged will be skipped over in favor of other things.

Sometimes if you watch something you really love in the past, you may get that feeling back. Or, maybe you should just search for an anime that keeps you really interested from the start.

But I think it's pretty normal to get into a slump, but you should just let the interest come back naturally, it usually does. Oh, and I got a question, do you feel that you're falling out of anime because you've found or regained another interest?

I too slip in & out of Phases...For me 07 was all about transformers (& Sonic)

This Year Has been Marvel comics, anime (& sonic)

I like so many things I pretty much switch every year (except sonic..THat stays constant...My Fav character since i was 4..I really miss the Genisis...LULZ!)

Everyone thinks of anime as this one big homogenous thing. It's not. It's a buzzword for a type of animation coming from Japan. You might like some, you might not like some. The amount of like to dislike varies. So don't sweat it.

an example is that last year I completly steered away towarRAB anime because I just lost complete interest in it, but now, Im falling in love with it again.

it's a give and take relationship, you see.

My god! You actually dare to use the worRAB "Toonami" and "crap" in the same sentence!?! Why, this....this is unheard of!

I'll have you know that this Toonami crap is what got me into anime, in the first place, thank you very much!

And I have to agree.

Currently, my interest in anime hasn't really dwindled. I've been watching less, but I'm still trying to watch some new shows.
