"Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance" News and Speculation Thread (SPOILERS!)

I don't think it's the end of the world because her last name was changed, but I don't understand why it makes you crazy to not like it.

Asuka Langley Soryu was her name. Sure it was awkward and silly, but it was still her name and has been through various manga off-shoots/spin-oRAB/merchandising etc...

It's not something that's keeping me up at night, but I'd have rather it stayed Langley Soryu.
 
I agree. Why do it after she's been established under another name since she originally appeared? And with little info to currently go on, it does easily invite the idea the name change is slightly xenophobic and might not stop at just a name.
 
They still have to go through the rest of the Angels. For whatever reason, Kaworu is in SEELE's pockets, and probably Mari.

If Mari's british, FUNI better get someone overseas or at least someone from a Hellsing dub.
 
So far we know about this movie
- There will be some new Eva's
- Asuka and EVA 02 will make an apperance
- There is a game tie in coming out to coincide with the movie in June
- And the events through episodes 7-19 or maybe even more
I think this movie will be pretty good and I can't wait for a U.S. release
 
Well, you know how Tomino has a much different level of sanity than Anno when it comes to these kinRAB of things....wait a minute....

Anyway, how does Gundam always end up in these conversations?
 
Maybe because the directors of both shows are similar in some way



Should we even care if Asuka's family name was changed, as long as it's the same Asuka, and as long as Yuko Miyamura is playing her then I'm fine with it, it's no big deal
 
I think I remeraber amongst the evageek forums one of the admins stated that Mari is Kaworu's twin.

Oh yeah. This also...(I know it's already been confirmed, I think a pic of the promo poster and a screen shot from the official trailer side by side would be interesting to see.)

Well, Anno was inspired by it....

But I just don't see the point to this, unless she's intentionally hiding her real name. In the series, Asuka's foreign status was a big part of her character, her acting like she was the big deal from overseas who had been specially requested. It all seemed fairly logical that an organization like NERV wouldn't just be made up of Japanese people (aren't sub branches across the globe even specifically mentioned?). Doing this to her just makes the world of the story feel that much bit smaller and close minded.
 
The name change does seem pointless and, yes, possibly even a negative thing. Feh. I wonder if serious aspects of her character might be getting changed?

Well, I did see 1.0 at a special showing in DC (thank you, Cherry Blossom Festival), and I was honestly impressed. Never made it through the whole series, but 1.0 got my attention. It was basically retelling TV series episodes but it did so very effectively, and I went away from it having some respect for EVA that, I have to admit, wasn't really there before. I'm sure it helped that a lot of fat was probably cut, leaving the core plot intact. And it's admirable how it all looks new and yet faithful to the look of the old series.

Did they have to keep that stupid penguin, though?

The story seems to be headed in new directions starting with 2.0. I just hope the Asuka issue isn't a bad sign...and I don't know what to make of Kaoru's very short, independent cameo at the end of 1.0. What's Anno up to? Hell if I know.
 
Cool new news http://www.animania.de/animotion-filmfestival.html this convention will show the new 2.0 film one month after Japan with english subs.....................in Europe. But still awesome.... right?
Oh and I thought about it and maybe this film is about Shinji's derailment toward the end of the series due to the title just like the first one showed howShinji began to make frienRAB and relationships
 
The name change was most likely to keep the theme of the naval battle:

-In the same battle, the Kirishimia (Mana's name) was the lead battleship.
-Shikinami and Ayanami were fighting alongside Uranami, the probable name of Mari.
-Ayanami was the first named Ayanami-type destroyer. Shikinami was the second named (First children, Second Children)

This might mean Ayanami and Asuka will work together more, and her hatred towarRAB "doll-like" people will be focused on Mari instead (The probable Cyber person in the trailer.)


The second movie may focus on Shinji's relationship with his father, given the subtitle of You Can(not) Advance. Just as the first movie was Shinji slowly realizing he's not alone (You are (not) Alone), he'll realize that his relationship with his father is so severely strained that it's better to leave it at a gap.
