Evangelion 1.0 Dub Cast announced (and Sgt. Frog coming soon)

We've talked so much about EVA but what about that other piece of news. My boy Keroro a.k.a. Sgt. Frog isn't getting a lot of love here. So did Funi change a couple of voice actors for the Season 1: Part 1 set?

It sounRAB to me like you're suggesting that FUNi might go the way of ADV when the latter released Saint Seiya (or "Knights of the Zodiac", depending on which dub you're watching); one version for the fans, and another for "everybody else". If that's the case, I'm not sure I want any part of it. When Yu Yu Hakusho (eventually) aired on Toonami, it was the same as the DVD version, except it was edited for broadcast in a mainstream timeslot. Can't Funimation do that with Sgt. Frog as well? That said, if they do use the "test" version for a TV broadcast, then that actually means that all of our opinions (both from the fans and everyone else) had really fallen on deaf ears in the long run, despite the creation of a version faithful to the original Japanese version. FUNi can't have it both ways. It's either faithful to the original version, or it isn't. There's no two ways about it. IMHO, it's an insult to viewer intelligence.

Incidentally, regarding the "test dub" in question, what exactly does "heavily Americanized" mean? Is the test dub a Shin Chan-style "gag dub" (as TV Tropes calls it), or something to that effect? Just curious.

Well they cut out all the mecha references and re-worded dialogue as per usual Americanization...

But I think any dub that uses the word "pwned" outside an internet setting neeRAB to go.

I was a ways back, the video camera is cheap, and having to hold it up made my Michael J. Fox come out even more, so the quality is not very good. Sorry.

As I expected, Greg Ayres was very unhappy about not reprising Kaworu. What's worse is that he was looking forward to voice him again when he was called in to record more Evangelion, and it wasn't until he actually recorded that he was told that he was voicing Kensuke, and not Kaworu. They really just went against his wishes and all logic when they pointlessly recasted him. I know he'll do a great Kensuke, but Kaworu was his character. Jerry Jewell will probably do a great Kaworu, but I expected to hear a voice coming from him that has been used before, and obviously can again. Does Kaworu really need four English dub voices? Maybe he'll get some more in the rest of the Rebuild of Evangelion. Watch out, Goku and Lupin. He's catching up. Assuming Mike McFarland also casted it, I should've asked him why he casted Greg as Kensuke, yet didn't have him reprise Kaworu when I was talking to him yesterday. Oh well. Hopefully some feedback can inspire them to have Greg reprise Kaworu for the rest of the Rebuild. Hell, he has such a small part in 1.0, they can have him redo those lines while he's at it. I don't think also being Kensuke will be a problem, but if it is, it would make more sense for him to just reprise Kaworu and not Kensuke. The latter also has a very small part in 1.0, so it wouldn't be much trouble.

WOW WALL OF TEXT MUCH?! This is what happens when I'm not near a computer for 3 days. All that said, everything else about this panel kept reminding me of how FUNimation is by far the best American anime company, and getting consistently better, especially when compared to ADV's simple Q&A panel.

Meh,having Greg replaced may have been good. I liked his Kaworu but ......he added a faint country accent to the character that got annoying if you rewatched the episode. I know its just me but still...at least he's getting work right?

I thought Hyuuga was only on his third one now, and I forgot about Touji. Probably because the series did, too. It's no surprise that neither Matt Greenfield nor "black" Hyuuga guy aren't reprising the role for FUNimation, and having Mike take over that role is a nice nod to Matt. Brett Weaver could've easily been used, but at least they're not casting him as a different role in the same movie.

I personally really liked it. He's getting work, but less than he should, and he was really upset about losing Kaworu.

I keep getting told Jewell can get within the original Kaworu's range. *shrug*

As for Kensuke, Greg's energetic high voice is way better than the loppy "*yawn* Oh, I have to voice-act? Alright" Kensuke that was the series dub. Too drawled out. And Toji's accent was way too thick.

Well so did Allison Keith (she's a school teacher now) but she still came back. So I am still wondering why Ms. Winn-Lee didn't return. I think she does game voices now.

Amanda hasn't done voices for a quite long time, according to her blog.

Allison still does dubs. Remeraber, she did Full Metal Panic and that's a pretty recent dub.

I'll have to listen to original Kaworu again, but Greg has shared at least 3 roles with Akira Ishida, so it can't be that far off.

I agree that Greg will be better than Kensuke's voice from the series dub, but Kaworu was his character and plenty of other people could have done Kensuke. I thought Brett's Toji was alright.

It was a mix of the drawling acting direction the texan accent that plagued the earlier episodes. Unfortunately due to the short roles, they didn't get any "improvement" progression like the other roles and made some events like Unit 04 infection uh....meh.

I am glad someone has the balls to stop copying the Japanese format, and get a different VA for Yui. Just because Megumi Hayashibara did all 3 voices doesn't mean Amanda should, too.

I'm kinda sad that they didn't use Brina Palencia as Pen Pen because she's doing Rei. And not having her do Pen Pen is killing the tradition of the voice of Rei doing Pen Pen.

She was recently in the dub for Persona 4 (as Yukiko) and less recently in Digital Devil Saga (as Argilla), so she's definitely still working. She was out of the game for a few years because of her kid's health problems, but reportedly that's cleared up now.
