England is a nation of overweight, binge-drinking reality TV addicts."

Any truth in this do you think?
Or is it another case of travel writers not visiting the countries that they write about?

Although this is partly true, it cannot be used as a rule to define a country, as a migrant in this country I do agree that binge drinking is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with and that reality TV seems to have taken over but despite figures that say otherwise when walking in any street in any part of England u don't see many obese people; maybe because they stay at home or maybe because the media are doing a very good job of creating panic and over inflating the issue (pardon the pun). I believe that for the most part, people in England are hard working, honest , law abiding citizens but the problem is that the media will not show the common folk and will only demonstrate the worst that England as to offer thus creating a generalised (and utterly wrong) point of view to the outside world.

You can't tar everyone with the same brush, but I'd say this is becoming the case not just in England, but throughout all of the UK, Ireland and the USA

While I do not fit that description, being a slim, non-drinking individual who loathes reality TV and the whole celebrity circus. I have to acknowledge that the stereotype is rapidly becoming a commonality!

Well lets see. Just look at the numbers of callers on the reality TV shows, it is truely astounding. It's talked about the following day on radio, blogs on the net and even right here on answers. Often with answers reaching 30+. Where questions on real issues get far less. 1 point for the writers. Binge Drinking, well this is a no brainer. It's all over the news, and in every town and city. Just talk to your local police, I think you will find that who do not drink, are in the minority, especially amoung the young. You can also walk into just about any pub at noon and find the "regulars" already on the ju ju. 2 pints for writers. Obesity is not at the epidemic proportions it is in the US but it is 2nd. The UK is the fatest nation in the EU. And when you see schools trying to serve quality lunchs only to be usurped by fat mothers taking take away orders at the fence. I'm afraid it doesn't inspire much confidence. 3 points to the writers. Generally unfriendly, is a way of life here. Just try this little experiment. Walk down the street in a town where you don't know anyone, or outside your neighbourhood, and while your walking say hello with a smile to people. Count how many say hello and smile back. I bet it's less than 50%. I have tried this on a few occasions and found the results amazing. As well, considering these travel writers are British, I don't think it's a case of not visiting the country.

What is truely sad, is that we don't believe things like this, and talk about tarring with the same brush, and "I don't do that, so it must not be true". It's like closing your eyes when being raped, pretending it's not happening.

That's funny, that's what we say about the Americans (minus the binge-drinking, add the burger binges). Maybe it's all in the perception. Or maybe we are ALL like that!

Actually I think they have hit the nail on the head unfortunately. I'm assuming you are reffering to the lonely planet guidebook? I've used these books all over the world and they are generally correct, although usually not so deflamatory! But think about it, just look around you at our popular culture (feckin no hoper 'celebs' this that and the other 24/7, jeremy kyle, mass obesity, binge drinking etc are the norms,) it's absolutely pathetic and sometimes I'm even ashamed to be English!

well i live in the UK, and i would say that we could be getting this way. were stressed!!!!

Not only does this apply to the English but also to the Scots and Welsh. However the Scots and Welsh use a little more charm to cover they're shortcomings whereas with the English what you you see is what you get. Let me tell you though that the English are the salt of the earth and would help most if they were in dire straits.

No more kind nation that the British overall.

As someone with relatives living in the UK and who loves many things about that country, I am sad to say that since the last time I was there some months ago, I can only confirm what you have said here. Even though it is a caricature of life there,
there is truth in it. You did leave out the cult of celebrity,
which is what passes for news there these days and have newspapers dedicated to it extensively and little else.

I really disagree with this statement. England is not filled with overweight people who sit in front of their television and drink beer all day long. Just because a few people are fat and lazy doesn't mean that everyone is. That's like saying Americans are stupid just because George Bush is in the white house. Generalising never gets everything correct.

To a degree, there's no smoke without fire, it's sad but true, (in a vast minority) HOWEVER..I think it is also a useful ploy to get that particular guide more publicity, therefore I will not be naming it other to say it's not Rough Guide, Bradt, Berlitz, Michelin or Footprint which are all as good, if not better..

Happy travels :)

Oh dear, more nonsense trotted out by some journalist with nothing better to do. We all know that there is this type of person in England......and Scotland, Wales, and any other western country you care to name.

So yes, there is truth in it, but as usual it's selective truth honing in on one particular nation, this time, England. It's quite boring now.

I dislike generalisation as it does not paint a complete picture .

We are all not over weight , binge drinking reality tv addicts .

its a load of bollox michael.
Im not over weight,I do not drink alcohol & have very little time for the telly.
I hate it when people generalize about things
sigh will they ever learn,I doubt it.
