It would impact the price of all products because energy is used in the production and transportation of everything.
 
Honest question, though: are we using more per capita, or less?

Obviously, China is on the rise. They're using more fossil fuels per capita than 20 years ago... but what about the US?
 
What consequences would you prefer? A destroyed habitat from pollution and green house gasses that results in adverse health affects or a loss in arbitrary paper that is deemed to have value with out actually being backed by anything?
 
So you mean that grocery stores would have to rely on local farmers and we couldn't buy cheap plastic crap from Walmart? Oh the horror!
 
I'd prefer a slow transition like I said before which will result in neither of those.

Well, okay, I'll concede- some air and water heating solar panels go on the south-facing wall.

Yea, I got the "solar shingles" comment. Those are "cute" and "novel" not useful. Try wiring that shit- it's a nightmare. Much easier to use 150w or so panels.
 
Fuck cost, they hardly offset their own environmental damage from production by the time their usable life is over. Its getting better, but the only truly good source of solar energy is fields of mirrors focused on heating water and running a steam turbine. Chemical solar cells are meh.

Nature gave us all the sources we needed for solar chemical energy, its call photosynthesis.
 
Small local farmers would be hit the hardest by a jump in energy prices as they are the smallest most vulnerable farms out there.
 
Environmentalists don't like those steam turbines cause they are noisy.

I'm only advocating home systems to supplement for now, not replace. People could also use wind or hydro depending on the environment they live in.

That would imply personal responsibility and a loss of governmental control. Why would the government want LESS control over the people and the energy they consume?

A solar water heater != solar power in the context we are talking here.

They suck for anything but pools anyway unless you like one 10min luke warm shower per night only if it was sunny that day.
 
Yes, they are. If your battery array is sized properly, even old-skool deep cycle lead/acid batteries can last 10 years or more. At the end of their life cycle, the acid is neutralized and the lead and plastic are recycled.

I don't know why people keep running amok in fear of this kind of change. It's this kind of irrational fear that brings these moronic legislative efforts to bear on us all. You (all, not just you, CBF) need to DO YOUR FUCKING PART TODAY so the politicians can't cram this green carbon tax crap down our throats tomorrow.
 
I don't think you're familiar with these solar/eletric and solar/gas hybrid systems. Might want to stop while you're ahead... or breaking even... or, well, at least not looking to unbright.

My dad actually has something similar, only his "alternative energy" is a woodburning stove with a closed-loop pipe running through the water heater in the winter. In the summer, it runs on the heating element, and in the winter, it runs on the outdoor wood burning furnace.

Anyone who knows anything about the industry knows about the damage from lead acid batteries. NiCd are even worse for the environment. These are not good systems.

Well, it's hard to refute your vague accusations of how bad batteries are, because it's so vague. Lead acid batteries are recycled (unless you're a gun-totin' redneck that just throws it in a creek, right?). Stores even attach core charges to encourage lead recycling. I guess you could go off on a further tangent and say that even the recycling process consumes energy, but it's difficult to compare apples (home-made electricity) to oranges (power plant provided electricity). No, they don't need batteries, but yes, they do need miles and miles of wire... and people to cut down the trees... and right-of-way to inspect the lines... and vehicles and manpower to maintain the lines... on and on.

I'm going to bow out now, though. If you're not convinced, you're not.

Unfortunately, the government solution, if we force their hand (or just stand by and let it happen), won't be to give everyone a boost in becoming energy independent. That's not in the nature of government. They will create huge money-pit solar farms and other boondoggles.
