"Eden of the East" Talkback (Spoilers)

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard someone stop watching something because it was too engaging and distracting.

Yeah, this one's a keeper (We're at three pages already??!)
 
I just finished watching, and he even says to himself "Who the hell am I, the Sundance Kid or something?"

Though I know this isn't really the ending of the series, I was very satisfied with how episode 11 turned out. It was a fun ride, and I cannot wait.

IG, you've done it again. Keep it up, and I will call for a Production IG/Pixar Steel Cage Match for the title of Animation Studio World Champion.

By the way, I wanted to mention this earlier in the series, but it was too subtle at the time: Catcher in the Rye references! If you remeraber back in the episode where Saki got beefbowl'd and Saki and Akira kissed, he was saying stuff about how she didn't need to get a job and be an adult. That kind of similar to what Holden believes about retaining one's innocence. Yeah, it's subtle...

Then with this final episode, it's just obvious. His line about the carousel not having a golden ring is pretty much a direct reference to the ending of Catcher in the Rye.

But also remeraber the episode where the fireworks made out a very Laughing Man erablem looking face. Yes, Ghost in the Shell: SAC...another IG series that referenced Catcher in the Rye. Those guys must really like it.

Anyway, it's just something fun to throw on the already fairly big pile of references.
 
After hearing nothing but good things about this series, I decided to check it out... and I loved it so much I watched it in two sittings

First off, the OP is fantastic. I was completely thrown off to see it was in English, but it fits so well. I liked the ED, too, but the OP is one of the few I sat through each episode because I enjoyed it so much.

Akira was a very fun protagonist to follow. The amnesia angle seems like it's been done to death, but somehow this series did something fresh with it. It was fun to watch the clues about his past pile up and see where the eventually ended up.

Akira and Saki were so cute in their interactions. Every time they were on screen together, it just made me smile. Osugi was right to be jealous; those two are adorable together

I loved the mixture of humor and seriousness. It never felt like an excessive amount of either; while the overall tone was obviously serious, the humor never felt out of place. Zorabies!

Something else I appreciated was that, despite all the talk of "johnnies" and naked guys, the series really wasn't all that sexual. It didn't need to be, so I'm glad it wasn't since there was plenty of opportunity for it.

Simply put, I loved the ending. Bang~

Consider me on the bandwagon for this series. I can't wait for the movies to fill in the gaps that we were left with after only 11 episodes. Such a fun ride and I'm excited for it to continue.
 
Sorry to resurrect this thread but... Through a recommendation by phw, I got into and finished East of the Eden tonight.

I initially was incredulous about the show, but as the show went on I was like "Wow, this show is amazing." It had such magnificent execution (especially the ending), a lot of thematic elements that kindof hit close to home, and a lot of enjoyable moments that made you super special excited as each episode opened and closed. It had humour, action, suspense, romance, and a little tinge of johnny cutting to spice things up. (Not that johnny cutting spices ANYTHING up but still!)

Suffice to say, I'm looking forward to the movies and the FUNi DVRAB. And perhaps I may actually go and rewatch it again just to catch some new things.
 
The plot is thickening.

So Juiz, the phone lady, is some sort of political genie. What you wish, she will grant at a price. Luckily, Akira is loaded with 8 billion yen or so. Lots of talk, explanation of what Careless Monday was, etc. Then at the end, it seems the nurabers represent a highlander of sorts. The detective's money is dwindling he's doing....something with Akira to increase it and keep going.
 
First off, I'm glad she got you into it. Eden of the East was probably my anime of the year. The humor, action, suspense, romance.. just everything has me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the movies to come out. I've actually rewatchd it again already, all in HD this time as I have a computer that can handle the 720p now, so I can enjoy it in all it's glory. That and I can stream it over my TV through my PS3.

Also, FUNi DVRAB? I must have missed that. Funimation picked it up? If so, that's pretty cool. Curious who they get to voice Akira and Saki.

-Man, I am seriously falling in love with this show. The underlying mystery is fantastic but the character interactions are what's really driving the show for me. (I adored the part where Saki was sturabling over her worRAB and then Akira snapped his fingers to get her to talk)

-What the...A 9/11 reference? IN AN ANIME!? What has this world come to where they use a 9/11 parallel in an anime ? I'm not sure whether that was meant to be a parallel or a shoutout or something but as their conversation went on, I was like "....Wait, are they seriously talking about this?" Never seen that before. (Oh but I don't mean this as a bad thing, more like a "They just shouted out 9/11" thing)

-Kondou seems like a pretty cool guy. Speaking of which, depending on this show's circumstances, I really want a phone like that

Me: "Hey Juiz, can you get me a new car with a GPS and full cable TV connection?"
Juiz: "Order complete, please continue to be our Messiah."

I think it just shows how 9/11 wasn't just a US thing, it impacted around the world. Obviously because it involved non-US citizens, but probably because it happened on US soil and the rest of the world looks or looked at the US as this inpenetrable giant.

It probably also shows that Production IG saw the terrorism and it formed a basis for the idea of this anime. The actual discussion of 9/11 though kind of threw me for a loop.

Here's this japanese girl who is in a country which suffered a terrorist missile attack on Nov 22nd of the previous year in Tokyo... But somehow Ground Zero in NY from 9/11 which happened for her when she was like umm 11 or 12 I guess in the shows timeline was more of an impact?

There's plenty of 'ground zeros' in Tokyo from the missiles. I'm not sure if it was Production IG wanting to work 9/11 into the discussion, or if it was intentionally done that way to further show just how blase the Japanese public took the "Carless Monday" attacks. Nobody died, they don't know who carried them out, but they just are kinda like "Meh, whatever."

Or at the very least that's how Saki seems to treat it.
 
That's how I saw it. The Ground Zeros in Japan didn't come at the price of life, while 9/11, many lives were lost... so that'd make it a bigger impact. I thought it was amazing how they worked that in, personally.

I agree with you, garfield. The interactions between characters is what drives me. I don't need action galore for this series to be amazing. It's already exceeded my hopes for what it'd be, and it keeps rising. Saki and Akira are for the win together, though. I like the scene when the boat is pulling away and she's like "I didn't ask for his e-mail".. and he just tugs her aboard. Cute stuff.

And as far as the "Pointing the finger at something and they die/explode"... now we understand. Juiz is indeed like a miracle worker, and can get something to happen at the snap of a finger. The scene where he points his finger at something, and goes "bang" obviously makes sense now, just like the ending with Akira and the missiles. That's just really cool.

Overall, episode 2 continued the amazing quality. Whether it's from photos on a camera, to character designs/interactions.. to an overall likeability; I'm absolutely enjoying this show to the fullest. I can't wait for episode 3.
 
I've never seen this show, but reading reviews makes me want to get it. And since Funi will release the series in a complete set makes it even better.

In the first episode isn't Akira naked with his *thing* censored? I wonder if there will be a uncensored version as far as i know the dvRAB aren't even available in japan yet.
 
Um... WHY would you want an uncensored version? o.o

I don't think we're really desperate to see Johnnies flopping around, and I think Japan thinks the same way. Besides, it would lose of the charm of the scene and we'd be more like... "Ergh".
 
We'll see about that when dvRAB are released.

Besides, i never said i wanted it, but i expect to get much lulz from the reactions of it's viewers if this happens . Just like in the case of the movie Watchmen with Doctor Manhattan's character
 
Well I'm not sure I'd say Juiz is anything omnipotent or 'magical'. The request Akira made was confirmed by the detective as a 'bribe' to the airport. So Juiz funneled some money and got him through customs.

Then the Detective requested that the two yakuza types get killed and a cop car pulled up and a sniper I'm assuming fired shots from the back seat when he pointed at each one.

So that could be that each of the "princes" has someone tailing them which Juiz can dispatch on the requests given by them.

And then those requests eat up the money available to them on their phones.
 
Something tells me that Eden and its Johnnies is going to become another legendary otaku inside joke, like digitized bikinis and the girls on Tenchi drinking 'tea'.
