East -vs- West: The Ultimate Showdown....

Like many people here I enjoy western cartoons (American cartoons) and anime (Eastern Cartoons) very much and watch them as often as I can, but someone asked me a question the other day that rocked me. He asked me "What do you like better? Eastern cartoons or Western Cartoons?". I thought long and hard and tried to come up with a cop out like "I love them both equally.", but that is a lame answer, he wanted me to choose straight up.

Then he refrased the question to, "If you had to live without one or if you had to chose one to have never been invented which one would of be?" he reminded me I couldn't give some roundabout answer that involved American and Japanese cartoons, I HAD to pick ONE.....

My answer was western cartoons (American), it killed me but I couldn't live without my childhood toons and my current favorites...

Now I ask you all the same question....east or west....

If somebody put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I?d choose western. However, that isn?t going to happen, and as it stands, there are both good and bad shows for both western and eastern animation, so one isn?t more dominant than the other.

This is just ridiculous...Both our great! It really just depends on a persons preferences! & the current culture/times. etc. I mean in the 80's & 90's one could say that Us animation was better. But this Decade has been hit & miss & miss for Us cartoons. Wich in turn has lead anime to become more popular with the Teenage & Young adult demographic. so when it comes down to it. Neither one is better then the other overall. Its just that one is always there to temporarly replace the other until it can get back on its feet (wich thankfully U.S. animtation is starting to do.)

So in conclusion the best is both east & west!

:p   :D

Most shows from the East are terrible, most shows form the West are terrible. Just give me the good ones and I'll be happy.

I don't think "I love them both equally" is a cop-out answer. I love a good Maryland crab cake as much as I love good sushi, even though the two are almost entirely different. The only rational way I can answer the question as phrased is that I'd have to take Western cartoons over Japanese ones because without the former, I don't know that we would have gotten the latter.

No one side is better than the other. The only reason some people say "ANIME IS MUCH BETTER THAN LAME AMERICAN CARTOONS" is because only the good 25% of Japanese animation has ever seen the light of day in the States.

1. As others here have indicated, America and Japan aren't the only cartoon-producing nations on Earth.

2. The whole "which is better: USAnimation or anime?" debate is older the the hills and lamer than a 3-legged mule. Once again, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Neither one is conclusively better or worse; they are just different.

The animation from one nation is NOT innately superior or inferior to the animation from any other nation. Elitist anime snobs are just as misguided and incorrect as hardcore anime haters.

The quality of the product depends solely on the individual show itself.

Well said.

As for me, I couldn't possibly chose between Western animation or Eastern. Both 'sides' have given us exceptional cartoons as well as really, really bad ones. In the end, shouldn't we judge something based on it's own merit rather than which hemisphere it's creator(s) happen to be living in?

This :^: But if I really had to choose, I'd pick Western animation. Most of my favorite cartoon were made in the Americas.

Santa Maria! I sincerely wish that fanboys and fangirls would stop trying to tout the superiority of USAnimation or anime and learn to appreciate both animation styles, and also remember that the world is a big place and that there are other countires and nations that produce animated cartoons, not just Japan and America.

I know that I've said this before, but, nonetheless, here it is one mo' time: A cartoon should be judged by the quality of it's content, not by it's country of origin.

I know that. By "The Americas", I meant both North and South America. And the fact that many of my favorite shows happened to be made in the States is just coincidence. I have favorite shows from many countries, but most are from Canada and USA.

Besides, in the context of the question, it wouldn't matter what I choose. The other wouldn't even exist.

My post wasn't in response to you, Ted. It was in response to the Anime and USAnimation Elitists who seem to believe that the U.S. and Japan are the only nations worth dealing with, animation-wise.

Well some people gave answers, other copped out and took the lame route but it seems pretty split....

Of course I love both and both are great but the idea of the question was if you "HAD" to choose without choosing both....

If I had to choose 1 country who's animation I had to give up (not counting what I already own myself) It would be the US.

I could go one with just animation from Japan, Canada and Europe. Sorry Americanos.

But sticking to only one country that'd be impossible.

Oh very well

If I had to choose between American cartoons and Japanese cartoons, I'd pick Japanese cartoons
If I had to choose between Western cartoons and Eastern cartoons, I'd pick Western cartoons

there
