E61 & Push email

Check out emoze.com. Excellent freeware app.

Also check out morange.com. Morange is another great free app but it's java. It supports webmail only though as opposed to emoze which needs Outlook or Lotus notes to work.

Does my computer have to be on for Emoze to work? Same question for Morange? I like to turn of my computer at night but I still need to receive my email.

Your PC does have to be on for emoze but not for Morange.

What type of email service do you use? If you use exchange or Lotus Notes then I don't think Morange will work for you as I believe the java app is POP3/IMAP only.

mail2web won't really help your situation as it's simply a free exchange-based webmail service. You would have to install Nokia Mail for Exchange to use it and then forward all of your emails to your web2mail account. This is a bad idea because all of your replies would come from your web2mail account...

Nokia Mail for Exchange is a fine option as well if you use MS Exchange btw.

Morange sounds like it might work but I have a couple questions if you don't mind. I can only think of 1 right now but can I poll 5 or 7 POP3 email accounts using Morange?
Thanks in advance for your help,

One mistake there. You can change your SMTP proxy address on mail2web, so it looks like any mail sent from it comes from your other account. For example, I used it for my Gmail email when I had a Dash. The best part, it's all free. I may have to look into this Mail for Exchange.

I don't think that part of it is free. I think mail2web charges you $1.99 per month to enable that "SMTP proxy faking" service. I use Nokia Mail for Exchange currently with a free mail2web live account, and I don't have access to that function without paying.

I believe you are correct. I don't think mail2web provides this functionality with the free service but Quake97 please confirm.

As far as multiple POP3 accounts are concerned in Morange, to be honest I don't remember. It's been quite a while since I used Morange. It is a great app though and it's 100% free (excluding your data plan) so you should download it and give it a try. You can always remove it if it's not for you. I should note that it provides many additional services such as Push RSS, PIM, free online file storage, mobile surveillance, and chat.

I currently use ProfiMail for all of my private accounts and emoze for my business email. ProfiMail is an amazing app but it is payware. IMO it's the best solution available for S60 3rd and multiple account management. It does not support true push though so it probably isn't the solution for you (you could set it to sync every 1, 2, 5, etc minutes if you want). I have no reason to push my personal emails...

emoze is great for me becuase my business PC is always on and I can just lock it like I always do and leave the emoze PC server app running. Then I can set emoze on my device to push email when I want it pushed, or sync at just about any time interval if I don't need push and want to save some battery life. If you want to look into it a bit more, there's a review on my blog at http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/.

Just a follow-up note. Nokia's Mail fo Exchange is generally a good program and works well with mail2web live's free exchange service. The only gripe I have with the program is that if for whatever reason you want to initiate a manual sync (let's suppose you don't have it set to always-online) you can't just do this directly from your exchange inbox, the way you can with a normal POP3 account. To do a synch you actually have to load up the exchange application separately and go into options, and select "synchronize" from the menu. Then exit the program and go back to your mailbox as a new action. With a normal pop3 account, you can just go into your inbox and select "retrieve mail" right from there, and read it instantly.

At least, this is the case with the slightly older version of Mail for Exchange I am using. If anyone can confirm that this has been changed in the newer version (1.5 I think) please do, and I'll definitely update right away.

In the current version of Mail for Exchange, you can do a "Synchronize email" under "Options" from your inbox.

On another note, my mail2web and Mail for Exchange solution stopped working a few days ago. I keeping getting a "Connection Failed. Try again later" error message every time I tried to retrieve my email. Anyone ever encounter this issue?

thanks!

I just tested my mail2web live account and it synchronized email fine with no errors. I'm going to try downloading the latest version of mail for exchange to test that sync-from-inbox function, thanks...

EDIT: Installed the latest Mail For Exchange version and confirm that it now lets you initiate email sync directly from the inbox, thank goodness.. and thanks atdbuzr for informing me of the change.

Incidentally, I'm using mail for exchange mostly because Gmail's pop3 access is very unreliable right now and has known issues with message reteireval being inconsistent. Specifically it will routinely wipe messages that have already been downloaded to your inbox, the next time you connect to retrieve. There are numerous workarounds to this, none of them acceptable or ideal. If Gmail would just fix their pop access, I'd be happy to use that as my primary account.

Er, what evil things did it do to your phone? I tried it to and didn't particularly care for it, at least in comparison to the default built-in email application. But I didn't notice any side effects.. what did you observe?

A quick semi-OT question... what do you mean??

I've been using Gmail's POP3 for a very long time now and I haven't even encountered a single sync error in probably the past 4 or 5 months. Even earlier than that erors were scarce. That's more stable my exchange server!

When you set it up in your phone use pop.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com as your servers instead of xxx.gmail.com and you'll find it to be extremely stable - and no cert errors in any email app.

For me, whether I use googlemail.com or gmail.com as the server, the following error occurs consistently, and has also been well documented on many forums and discussions boards throughout the internet:

When I connect to my gmail inbox by pop3, it downloads my mail fine. Then after I *disconnect*, and reconnect to retrieve mail the next time, the previously downloaded messages disappear completely from my phone's inbox and I get the message "No new email messages."

Even previously downloaded messages which were there a minute ago, vanish from the phone's inbox completely. As long as you stay connected you can retrieve as many times as you wish, but once you disconnect and reconnect again, all messages vanish.

This happens regardless of what pop3 settings you choose at gmail's configuration page. All messages, messages since whenever date, etc, etc.. I've tried every option and nothing makes a difference.

It has nothing to do with messages being deleted on the gmail inbox. They are still there if I log in from the web, but do not show up on my phone. Once you download them once, then disconnect, then reconnect, and try to download again, all messages vanish. If a new message arrives you will be able to download it, but again only the first time. The next time you try to retrieve, that message will be eliminated from the inbox.

"Leave message on server" is selected and it still doesn't make any difference. It seems that once a message is flagged as "already downloaded", it will vanish the next time you try to check mail.

There are workarounds: choosing to only download the first 999K of any message as your default, instead of "whole message and attachments" will leave the message flagged as "not completely downloaded" on gmail's system, and it will not vanish then ext time you check it. However this type of option isn't available from many desktop email clients, so if you want to be able to access your mail from both phone and PC, it won't work. Once you download mail from your computer (again, even selecting to "leave messages on server") you will no longer be able to get the messages on your phone, as they will now be considered "already completely downloaded" and get wiped fro myour phone's inbox.

You can also choose to use "recent:[email protected]" as your login name, which will avoid the message-wiping problem. But that will only keep messages from the last 30 days. If you want months or years worth of emails to remain accessible in your phone's inbox, that solution won't work.

Don't ask me how a problem at Gmail's server is actually causing my E61 to erase messages from the inbox. Previously downloaded mail should always remain in the inbox, regardless of whether anything *new* is found while checking the server. Even if everything were to be deleted off the server, the stuff you downloaded should still remain there, just like it does on any desktop email program like Thunderbird. On Thunderbird, downloaded messages do stay in the inbox, but if you access them with your phone first, Thunderbird will fail to retrieve them when you check. Even if you select to download "all" messages and not just new ones, somehow that "already previously downloaded" flag kicks in and prevents Thunderbird from getting them.

Gmail seems to be treating its pop3/smtp accounts as some sort of IMAP hybrid, where the content is always synched between all devices. Somehow that signal must be getting accepted by my phone, and when it is told that there are "no" messages on the gmail server, it responds by making sure that NO messages show up on my local E61 inbox.

But that's not how POP3 is supposed to work. What gets downloaded to Vegas is supposed to STAY in Vegas, not disappear the next time a download is attempted.

Hmm, I'm guessing that it's more of a problem with compatibility between gmail and the integrated email app in s60 3rd. I have not had this problem once using Morange, ProfiMail, Always-On mail or any other email app that Ive tried. I've also never had this problem in any of my old phones.

I've never set up my gmail account with the integrated email app, although Always-On Mail does use the integrated app to an extent.
