E61 & different keypads confusion...

Ok. I have the chinese (?) keypad, all the english keys are there with a few of the asian characters on the keys. Grey box. English mnual. Purchased from a local shop in midtown nyc.
SO, is there a problem with this? The keys i need are there and the foreign chrs dont get in my way. Could the hardware be inferior somehow? Other than making sure the firmware goes with the kbd (or so ive heard), is there any reason i would be better off with another versionOf this phone?

E61 & different keypads confusion...

Hi Guys!

I am really confused. Not sure which is a good keyboard layout to buy... for that matter i am not sure if i have a choice since most people won't even tell you what they are selling you. But ????phonesource-usa over at eBay was nice enough to send a pic of what he is selling.

Is this a good one? I don't see the $ sign and i would have liked that. But any advantage of this over others... i really want to buy this phone and if this thread had not been started i would have never thought of different keyboards. Now i am lost!!! I am an arranged marriage kinda guy... can't deal with choice *l*. HELP ME OUT PLEASE!!

Thanks
mK

Sure, I'll add some... let me try to find a picture of the other layout I know of and will edit this post. Here is the one I want (UK layout with Polish manual?)

It also happens to be the one picture that 99% of ebay auctions are using yet it looks like nobody is actually selling this layout.

Layout #1:

Layout #2: (Prototype? Looks "wrong"/bad, IMO?)

Layout #3:

(a little dark and taken from 2k1s' review thread here)

EDIT: Can someone confirm if one of the layouts 1 & 2 is a prototype perhaps? I see no logical reason for having those two be different otherwise?

I just got a UK model from llcellular for $365 shipped. emailed to confirm keyboard before sale, and then chewed my nails for 5 days. But it's perfect!

It seems like more UK units are available. Is this because people have gotten wise to the arabic/chinese business and wholesalers aren't able to pass them off anymore?

The advantage or disadvantage solely has to do with what characters you can input without pressing the 'car' or 'chr' key. That's the one I have, and, like you, would like to have a '$', but I haven't found it a problem due to the way that the 'car' works. Since there are few characters I need to type that aren't on the keyboard, the ones that do are only a button press and perhaps a few pushes of the stick to the right.

IOW, if you really want the phone, go ahead and get it.

what about hi-mobile.net or newconnection1? I want the e61 with the US keyboard layout (just $ symbol and no other strange characters) NOT the UK (gbp, usd, eur) keypad. which would be the best place to get this phone from with the US keyboard layout? I want to purchase this phone from somewhere that I know (100%) I will be getting a brand new sealed in box e61 with the US English keypad (just $ symbol and no other strange characters).

thanks tons for all your help.

all the best,
ipaqman

I contacted mobilebee about the layout and manufacturing country.

this is just BS they are unable to track manufacturing country and garantee the phone with english keyboard layout.

There are already alternate symbols on most of the keys.

FWIW, the only thing I dislike about the layout I have (#3) is that there is no $ or \ available on the keyboard itself. Lucky for me I only very rarely need a \ character. A $ would be handy, though...

What's weird is that they could have put all the characters on all three of the layouts into one if they didn't have keys on each version that don't have alternates.

E61 & different keypads confusion...

Layout #1 appears to be "worldwide English" since there are ?$? on the keys. #3 has no $ and has extra letters so is probably "Euro English".

This one I saw on eBay is probably "US English" since it has $ but no ??. The seller also described it as having Polish manual and white box.

Wow... yet another layout (I was ignoring the Asian & Arabic ones I saw and didn't post those on purpose but didn't think there were many others out there....)

Which seller (if you recall) was selling that one, by the way?

newconnection1 use to have the US layout you describe. I actually emailed them and update to my order saying I'd prefer that layout but if its not possible the UK layout will do.

Someone called NOkia and they will do a keyboard swap for Found out that you can you can do a keyboard swap for $17 apparently.....

Not sure if I'm going to do it or not.
