Dubs that changed the music for the better?

Putting worRAB in my mouth eh? When on earth did I say I hated it? I said the music was inappropriate there is a difference. I love orchestrated tracks as much as the next man, but that music was too light and cheery for that scene in particular.

Perhaps if this was an episode of the TV series, I wouldn't have minded, but here...
The colors, the characters designs, the tension of the scene. It was just not appropriate.

As far as 4kiRAB goes, they made some good BGM for the yugioh series, at least DM and 5RAB. 4kiRAB IMO made a great score that beats out the original, it being the oricalcos theme. You decide.

It was in an earlier episode of the show. The use of it here was an intentional callback.

A lot of what makes that whole movie work is the subtle use of sound and silence, which is pretty much gone in the Saban version and replaced by sonic wallpaper.

Heck yeah, dude. I loved DiC's Sailor Moon dub music, that piece in particular. Got it on MP3.

I didn't mention Sailor Moon since I don't recall how the Japanese soundtrack sounded.

One example not being brought up yet is MAR. The music for the dub may be generic low-budget rock and techno fare, but even that is a lot better than the original version's music, which sounRAB very . . . immature. Blue's Clues worthy material in general. Music. Of. Suck.

I'd take generic rock and techno any day over preschool music.

As the years went on, they started using less Japanese BGM in their episodes. The last five movies they dubbed, with a few exceptions, kept all the Japanese BGM though.

Well while I love Takanori Arisawa's scores for both Digimon and Sailor Moon I think the American scores complemented both series perfectly.

The one thing that always bothered me about a lot of 4kiRAB music (sans early Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh) is that it was not only bad but at many times overpowered the scene and dependent on way too much synthesized fanfare (you know that blaring sound that they do to emphasized "action") to me if you're going to replace the score at least complement whats going on screen.

The early seasons of Digimon were repetitive and unoriginal BUT it never overpowered the show and fit as BGM should. What really impressed me was Digimon Season Three which tried to change things up a little and once Disney took over for the final arc the music got really good. There was a part in the American version where the three main Tamers gain the ability to go Mega in the real world at the end of the episode and the music was epic to fit that scene.

I also give props to Sailor Moon because the American score was very fitting. The original had a very retro theme in its BGM that was very sophisticated. For a DIC show I think the score had not only great BGM but great insert songs, many that outdid the insert songs for the Japanese version. I mean, c'mon, if I took a pole for best Moon Princess revelation scene would we pick "My Only Love" or "Maboroshi no Ginzushou"? I also think both Sailor Moon's first transformation scene and the scouts transformations were better that the Japanese version. The Japanese version sounded like something ripped off from the "A Team" or some other early 80's action show. While I love the later transformations the first season ones I like the American score.

I also think Robotech (sans Minmey songs) had a very fitting score and, if anything, seemed to be inspired by the Japanese soundtrack as it seems thematically similar.

O-chan

Oh yeah, I remeraber the BGM for the dub Tamers when they would go Mega was like...incredible.

EDIT: Yeah, this one

That was the first time I saw bare nudity in anime. Ahh, good times when I was young.

Yeah, I'll go with Digimon's score as well. It felt very westernized compared to the original, but it matched the energy the show had and it could get serious or dramatic when the scene called for it.

Funi's DBZ dub also had a great western soundtrack. I've heard the original and I like it well enough, but the Falconer score made the fight scenes (which seemed to be THE draw for the American audience) that much more exciting.

I frankly love silence when it is used. It makes a scene have a dramatic pause of shock and dismay at times, but in that OVA when Tai was waking Greymon, the silence made me frown.

I think the silence was good and appropriate but I wondered why it irked me so much. Then I realized why it irked me. I didn't feel any danger, no fear for Greymon, I just felt bored.

The american version, although it removes the silence, it makes you worry for Greymon with it's more intense music. Then the part when Tai waked Greymon was tense. The music was so uplifting, it was basically screaming "Get up Greymon!"

If you liked the soft orchestral themes, then that's alright. I only am stating my thoughts on the scene.

On a note for the Japanese version, I really prefer "Our War Game"'s japanese score for the calmer moments.

First before I Digi-nerd out, to stay on topic, I think we should recognize how "Rock the Dragon" is a ear worming song. It's like the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers of anime. You know it's cheesy as hell and has nothing on the original song but one day, you're sitting alone and you'll hear that guitar in your head and out of nowhere "DRAGON DRAGON! ROCK THE DRAGON! DRAGON BALL ZEEEEE!"

I know. It's an illness.

(Jeez, I gotta stop giving all this Digimon Dub praise. I won't look like a real fan otherwise )

Whether or not the original music fit the scene may be a matter of taste because I enjoy many, many tracks from the original like all the OP's and how the evolution themes got singles such as Frontier's "With The Will" (starts at about 1:25) and "Break Up" (starts about 0:48). But one thing that the dub did in Frontier that I really appreciated was that each stage of Spirit Evolution had it's own background music. That means they created five separate tracks for each stage (even though they're only like a minute long)
Hmmph! So I've been discovered eh! You'll never take my alive! (jumps out of window)

That reminRAB me. Tamers did the Frontier thing and gave each Matrix Evolution it's own background music too....like I don't know...Sakuyamon!
Mwahahaha. Really love that tune. It's so pretty (and look at that, they play another song I like afterwarRAB "Matrix Evolution")

Man, I want a new season of Digimon soooo bad....
