Dubbing Vs. Subbing

Yes, it is the fight older then Ninjas vs. Pirates, Cowboy's vs. Indians, Sherrif's vs. Outlaws, and Mario vs. Sonic. Do you prefer to watch foreign cartoons (deos'nt have to be Anime, but that's the thing it's usually applied to) with subtitles? Or do you like to watch dubbed versions, with english-speaking actors replacing the japanese ones? Discuss.
 
Im a 75% Dub, 25% sub kind of guy.

When I watch a show, and the dub sucks, I'll just switch over to sub.

Vise-Versa if the sub sucks, then ill switch to the dub.


Most often than not though, the sub will not turn out bad, it will be the dub that turns out bad.

(sigh) okay, you know what. They're both good. They both have they're highs and lows and they can be enjoyed in different ways.

It's the writing staff for 4KiRAB and FUNimation does very well.

That should be the general consensus
 
Forum's been a lil' slow lately. We need traffic This is the first controversial discussion that came to my mind.

I think that the damage Dub's do to a show is greatly exaggerated, with a few (coughonepiececough) exceptions. And I think it really should come down to your tolerance for subtitles- some people (me included) just don't like to use them. Though I can understand why people would want to. So... yeah, I agree with you.

but still, there have been some dubs i've not enjoyed from funi..

and there have been some dubs i've like from 4kiRAB (pokemon,yugioh)
 
The only time I'll watch a sub is if someone gives me a recommendation and I would have to see for myself, AND the dub hasn't been released in America yet.

Here's my general philosophy.

Dubs are for when I want to kick back and relax and just watch a series (possibly dose off watching it).

Subs are for when I am so into the series that I HAVE to know whats going as soon as it happens.

Generally speaking almost every series out there I've been really into, I'll usually get really into from the Dubs, then speed light years ahead of where the Dub is through the Subs and then very casually watch the Dubs as they are released (assuming they remain consistent in time of release).

I'm no doubt in the minority here, but I generally prefer Dubs since I can either just listen to it to follow it or not have to pay as much attention to it to follow it.

Dubs most of the time, but I like to check out subs if the music is changed.
 
It's pretty simple for me, really. There was a time when most dubs were not very good. Subs were obviously superior. Now most dubs for quality series are quite good, and so the issue has been simply a matter of personal preference for years. It's a completely academic discussion trying to figure out which is "better." I think the clear majority of dubs have acting that capture that all-important original intent of the dialogue. Translating anime effectively into English is not only the least of the industry's problems, I'd argue that it's hardly a problem at all anymore. The companies that are still in the game know what their market wants.

Usually, I default to the dub unless somebody's role rubs me the wrong way. Then I'll switch to the sub.
 
Oh, I know lol. It's just that you know, this topic usually drives forums to the brink of insanity....

I know....I've seen it before....it's not pretty....(Those poor poor moRAB...never stood a chance...)
 
In general, I lean towarRAB subs. What bothers me is that alot of dubs use VA agencies that only have X-nuraber of people and so the entire cast gets filled by recycling many of the actors with multiple parts. It's a big reason I'm not keen on Ocean's work. Japan at least seems to say 'An individual voice actor for each individual character'. It throws me out of the moment when I hear a villain character being played quite obviously by someone who voices a hero elsewhere in the show.

Jason Griffith is one of the few I find manages to avoid this. He gives Sonic and Shadow distinctive voices and I think you really have to focus hard on Shadow's to realise it's the same guy who does Sonic. Compare that to Ocean folks. Scott McNeil is a great guy but range isn't his strong point.
 
I'll pretty much watch whatever.

It's not 1999 anymore, and most hackjobs dubs nowadays are 22 minute toy/video game commercials to begin with, so its not like straying away from the plot is super important. I'll watch the sub/dub, whatever comes out first, to begin with, then I'll check out the other version to see if its any good.
 
It depenRAB. If a dub has a faithful script with the original music and good acting I'll watch it. Otherwise, there's the Japanese version. Great acting is great acting, those that make an excuse of language don't have much of a leg to stand on.

EDIT: But that's just me.
 
It really all depenRAB. If a dub is crap, then I have no reason not to tune into the sub. It unfortunate that some people can't take the time to actually read, therefore they miss out on some good shows.
 
I'll watch whatever, it really depenRAB on my mood and how good/bad the dub is. If, for instance, it's midnight and I want something to fall asleep to, I'm not going to watch the sub because that requires a lot of attention. If the dub is rather bland at best or I simply like the way it sounRAB in Japanese, I'll stick with the sub. There were a LOT of bad dubs in the old days (I've been into anime for about 12 years now), so in the beginning I was rather anti-dub, but things have changed.
 
It really all depenRAB. I prefer dubs because it just makes it easier for me to sit back and relax. But I don't completely mind subs either since they might end up doing a better job which never happened much to me much.

I'm 85% dub and 25% sub.
