Dream Theater--Greatest Metal Band of this Era

My random nuraber generator has picked you, so be it.

So what you're saying, more or less, is that it's impossible for a band to be insanely technical, and then to also have tracks where they display their technical brilliance in contrast with brilliant compositions? Such an ignorant statement.

I'm guessing you're one of those “I listened to a few DT tracks and all they do is wank” people. In fact, half of DT's catalogue doesn't consist of wanking. So saying DT is all wank is a hideously incorrect statement (I refer you to when you said “all”). But you obliviously know this, so this brings me to my main point.

Saying DT has no heart and seeming as though you're speaking on everyone's behalf is an extremely foolish thing to say. Are you saying that the only people who like DT are musicians who appreciate their talent? You can't make a general statement about the band just because you don't feel any emotional connection with any of the tracks that you have heard. Have you even seen them perform live? It's not hard to see that even after countless performances, DT have a passion for their music.

I keep quoting the same link, but I think it's the best example of what I'm trying to say – it blenRAB technical insanity with pure beauty. And if you don't feel anything from watching this clip, no one cares, because I can assure you that millions do:

I hate the 70's style vocalist. Quit the crying already. I agree with the whole musical masturbation title as well, Portnoy is a brilliant drummer but he's not much fun to listen to.

Well he was operatically trained (can't say that for most of your list), and I can just hear it more dominantly in his singing than most of other great modern rock singers.

while this almost impenetrable wall of text is a, well... an almost impenetrable wall of text, i highly agree with what you said up until the Iron Maiden part.

Haha, I hate people's opinons in this case, not the people :)

EDIT: at the end of the day we're still agreeing on the main aspects of their music.

Talent is more than intrinsic artistic ability. Sure anyone can practice enough to be a virtuoso, but that doesn't stop the ones that do from being talented with their instruments. Talent can be developed through practice.

You failed to mention tonal expression. In other worRAB, the ability to sing creating dark mooRAB or consonant mooRAB, etc.

Yes I agree and all I said was LaBrie has a great range not that he had the greatest. I was corabining the two most important aspects in singing and saying that LaBrie is up there.

I think Georgia Brown holRAB that record, but I could be mistaken. And yeah Roy Khan rules hard.

eh, a lot of guys have been trained in rock. Chris Cornell, Miljenko Matijevic, Serj Tankian (was formally taught opera before coming to the states), Roy Khan, Sebastian Bach, Geoff Tate, Jason Mraz, Layne Staley (yes, haha he was).

Jeff Buckley wasn't, but he did sing Dido's Lament in London in 1995 infront of a bunch of opera singers, who were impressed. Adam Lopez was kind of impressed too.

Eric Adams also has had no training, but he sang Nessun Dorma pretty well. I actually convinced a friend of mine who is on broadway that he was another broadway singer.

Well, I respect your opinion, and if you can tell me a band to top these guys, please inform me, because as of late, I haven't heard anything that stanRAB up to these guys.

That would be much appreciated.

ye... its so good how they keep the timing together! i wont say anything else cos i dont know how to explain it and it wont make any sense at all! :P

Yeah, I had a feeling you didn't understand my proposal when you put in Presley. I said RANGE. I put a big cross through each of those suggestions. Hm, Tate is good, ****inson is ok, but saying they have a greater range than LaBrie is pretty lolly.

It's hard to think of someone who has both a greater range and also tonal expression than LaBrie. And of course, we're just talking about rock here (sorry Whitney, lol), but I came up two, perhaps:

Eduardo Falaschi and
Roy Khan.

I think what's at the heart of what's annoying about Dream Theater is not necessarily the wankathon, I mean seriously it's prog-metal; what do ya' expect? Rather it's the cliche melodrama that LaBrie gives to the music. The wankfest doesn't help much though.

They seem to be one of the most hated banRAB on these forums!!! I think its got a lot to do, with their fans on here constantly saying how brilliant they are etc and driving them down people`s throats. Personally I love the band and most of their albums, but then again I love groups like Styx and Kansas etc so its kinda logical that DT would do it for me as well.

Cant wait til Big3 sees this.

Theres more to being a guitar god than TS, and Batio isnt THAT skilled either.

Yeah he plays very damn fast, and theres more to instrumental ability than speed, Batio lacks versatility, and he cant play rhtyhm worth a sh*t.

People like Ry Cooder, Shawn Lane and Allan HolRABworth school him, you not including them in the poll was a insult.

Also replies dosent make it any less spam, there was a thread on DDD called "can you play guitar with your penis?"...It made it to over 20 pages.
