Dream Theater--Greatest Metal Band of this Era

I agree.

It's funny to see what is the main topic of this threaRAB - arguments, arguments, arguments. Well, the first post also wasn't lucky start of the thread :D
I like them. They aren't something like top 10 for me, but good music. But I have to admit it is up and down - I like some songs a lot, some songs are annoying for me. And voice of James... Hm, not bad but of course I know lot of better voices.

I get what your saying but a lot of the avant garde artists are really talented technically and in the sense that they have amazing ideas and levels of creativity. So I dont think 'farting through a talk box' will actually get you anywhere & Ive heard some weird stuff.

If you want some weird stuff ???? :pimp:you should check out a band called King Missile (they have several incarnations I, II & III) - all of which are, let me put it, different.

Avant Garde & Jazz is probably the two most exciting genres in music for me as you tend to find with Rock that its really predictable, like alot of the time when I hear a song for the first time I can predict the next lyric or part of the song (as Im listening to it) before I even hear it.

Thats probably why I got into metal in the first place- as I got bored of the more simpler forms of Rock.

As for Dream Theatre's music, I couldnt say I hated it as such, I just think its pretty crap (but cant deny there technical ability) & people who say there the best metal band are talking balls; but there entitled to their opinion at the end of the day; after all if these people didnt exist then there would be nothing to talk about.
Just think how boring it would be if everybody agreed on all aspects of music.

F*ck Sh1t bollocks, sorry I meant David Coverdale :stupid:.
I know they dont really sound alike (Gillan + Coverdale) but for some reason I always get the names mixed up...(dont ask why).
Look im not knocking the guys talent, just Id rather listen to David Coverdale/Whitesnake than a rip off of the exact same thing...

As for the hearing aid, I've not reached that age yet, good luck to you if you have though (dont forget to turn it up) :finger:.

As a meraber of DDD and frequenter to the vocal list (and the guy who taught all these guys about the technicalities of voice), as Boo Boo knows...I don't like the list actually as is. The guy who originally made it basically knows nothing about vocals.

Importance and influence are highly subjective and shouldn't be weighed very heavily into this. Influence is only influence if the artist has said it personally, or has covered numerous songs of theirs, or sounRAB almost exactly like another artist (like how Kenny Wayne Shepherd's blues guitar sounRAB exactly like SRV's..maybe it has something to do with being from Texas though). Importance is highly subjective in that what I think is important, someone else may not think the same.

I may think Jussi Bjoerling was an important opera singer, while my voice teacher may not think so. If I didn't enjoy 50's R&B, I wouldn't think guys like Roy Hamilton would be important, unless I wasn't biased, but most people when it comes to music ARE biased (which is a big shame).

But when we're talking about vocalists, there isn't much room for this stuff. There's only so much you can do with your voice. You can take devices and sing into them and augment your voice, sure, but you can't actually do a lot to your voice. With guitar, you can alternate pick, sweep pick, right hand tap, play chorRAB, etc. With the voice, you can sing one note at a time (although few people in the world can sing 2 distinct notes at once which aren't overtones), slide up to another note, use vibratto, use your throat to get gruffness (or, if you're good you can get gruffness from your diahragm), etc.

Should importance and influence be factored in? Of course, it's a "greatest of" list, but with vocals you also have to look at technicalities and there aren't THAT MANY vocal styles out there. Most styles come with diction, phrasing, and dynamics.

Don, I'm not trying to provoke an argument here, but you claim to be the smartest person on this forum with an extemely high IQ. What makes you think others here are not of a similar ability.
Sure you probably know your sh*t when it comes to music, but changing the subject to something close to my heart.Would your high IQ help you with anything automobile related or anything mechanical. If so show me something, amaze me even.

And as for degrees, passing something on a piece of paper is no substitute for practical experience. I have frienRAB/acquaintances/associates who have degrees in various fielRAB, but it still doesn't make them any wiser or better than me.In fact some of them are as durab as sticks.

Please answer me this. Why must insist in making yourself feel more superior than the next person? The only person it is impressing is you, nobody else cares.

Adam doesn't have a range over 7 octaves just because he can hit that one extreme high note :P

The record for males is 6 octaves.

And I think the highest note is G10 which is out of human hearing range, but otherwise it's of "musical value" I believe.

Answer: I was being sarcastic. I hope you're aware that boo boo is the one that acts like his superior to me (or anyone else for that matter). Please understand it, it's not hard. Just go over some of his posts will you?

Wow, what a relevant and accurate statement there.

Nice exception there, too bad it means nothing.

So there goes your bias point then, nice going.

Silly boy. "best" ones? That's what the whole poll was about, picking random ones for people to decide who the best ones were there. If I just listed all the guitarists I thought were the best, then I wouldn't have made a poll to begin with.

Isn't "random" in your vocabulary?

Saying Batio isn't a technical God is almost more lolly than saying there are 20 keyboardists better than Rudess. And apparently you know more about technical ability than me...

How can I plan it out when I'm given a time limit? It's extremely hard to do, and once again, that wasn't the point of the poll. I've already explained what the point of it, I know it's hard for you to understand it, it's okay my little handicapped boy.

And if it was such a waste of bandwidth then how come it got so many replies? If I had of done what you intended, most people would be lost, the average person would rather see someone like Cobain than Lane, for example.

Silly, silly boy. Name me a singer who has a better range and tonal expression than LaBrie. And my list above is non-arguable :P

I said instantly.

Because you're an absolute idiot most of the time so of course all I need to do is say “rofl,” I thought you understood that by now. But of course, every now and then you say something so stupid that I need to guide your poor soul.

Attention everyone: boo boo thinks he knows more about technical ability than me and he think MP = Petrucci and Rudess is worse than both of them. He also thinks there are at least 20 (yes he wasn't being sarcastic, TWENTY) keyboardists better than Rudess.

I never said I couldn't, I said it'd be extremely hard. And it'd also be hard for you if you weren't so blinded by bias all the time.

ROFL. I was going to post a link, but this reply was too good to go to waste, here we go, everyone, here's what I said in my “Ultimate Guitarist Poll” thread some time ago, in which booey had no comeback for, of course:

“lol!!! Wow, you think you're like the smartest man in the world when it comes to music rofl. And for a 19 year old, that's pretty hilarious if I do say so myself.
It's also funny how you think I don't know what you're trying to say, hahaha. Oh wow, so let me get this straight; you're saying that composition is a part of technical skill! omggg how the hell did I guess that? I must be a genius (which I am). You're just too durab to realise the basis of what I've been arguing with you, and I'm obviously on the winning side since I'm the one that started the poll! lol times 5!

So okay, I'll explain my side for you, being the law grad that I am:

1) The first and most important point is: I made the poll so I'm the one that consequently decides what the theme is about,

2) I was initially going to make it in terms of technical skill alone but I realised that the misinformed wouldn't actually know who (or how) to vote, which is silly in itself, so there isn't really a need for such poll, and indeed one of this magnitude,

3) So what I decided to do was make it in terms of technical/[SLASH]composition, with the slash meaning OR, or a corabination of the two. So this means that someone could vote whom they thought was the best technical guitarist (and decide that by technical skill alone or composition, which is what you've pointed out so obviously to me) OR, they could choose to vote for a guitarist that they just happen to appreciate for whatever reason, and that reason can be durabed down to “composition,”

4) Now, there of course is a major flaw with this poll and indeed of all polls. The flaw being that the maker of the poll isn't assured that the people voting will share similar (or a relatively high) knowledge about the theme of the poll. Which means, in terms of this example, that obviously not everyone is going to have heard every single CD and demonstration video of every guitarist on there. And even if this was the case, who's to say if they really know what's technically skilled or not? Which would mean that you would have to be perhaps a professional guitarist to vote properly if you were going to vote purely on skill and come to an appropriate conclusion. But of course, I posted this poll on a site which features people of a wide range of ages and knowledge, which means that if someone liked a guitarist just because they play for their favourite band (or for whatever reason), that's fine. And it's something that we can't measure, and if we could there wouldn't be a point for a poll,

5) The main conjecture is that you were saying composition is a skill that can be measured objectively and thus be contributed to skill. I actually agree with this (and had many long arguments about it), but this is not what I was arguing against here. I was arguing about the theme of the poll, and like I said, I made the damn poll, so of course I'm right. I created this so called argument because of your extreme arrogance which seems to exponentially clirab. I merely wanted to point out that thinking Cobain was skilled for whatever reason is fine, and that it seems like you think you get to decide who likes what and like you know exactly who the BEST EVER MUISICANS WITH A 100% CERTAINTY are. I gave up caring about that whole crap long ago when I realised music is a lot more about who's the best, it all comes down to recognition, which all comes down to feeling...And I learnt that when I was about seven...”
