"Dragon Ball Kai" Saiyan Story Arc (#1-16) Talkback (Spoilers)

So what you're basically saying is that they make this stuff up as they go along.

Anyway, good stuff. And of course the internet didn't exist. I was just making a joke about our weekly manga talkbacks.

My, how far we've come

Remeraber when this came on Toonami and we were like "Pff...OLD!"

vegeta makes me lol, "its like his battle power is completely different since he fought raditz", well no duh, he was at 320 when he fought Raditz and you just read his power at over 8000, who makes these lines?

I wonder if this new Dragonball Kai will somehow create a new breed of "anime purists" who only watch the original anime and refuse to watch this new Kai version because it eliminated some animation.

Once Kai finished altogether, I can't wait to see the future debates of DBZ Vs. DB Kai and which was better.

I can't see FUNI *not* getting this somehow. Hopefully they'll keep the dub as close to the original as possible this time, although the different dub names will still be there, such as "Tien" and "Special beam Canon."

I don't really care about that though, so it doesn't bother me.

The cropping in today's episode was really, really distracting.

When Yamcha died in today's episode (OMG SPOILER!!!1!1!), they played that really great song that they played when Goku died back in Episode 003. However, as much as I like that song, I hope Kai doesn't overuse it. We've got a few more deaths to go in the next few episodes, and I think the "special-ness" that that particular piece of music has at the moment will be lost if we start to hear it week after week.

Basically, Evangelion was the starting point, Pocket Monsters (porygon episode) is what got everything into full force. I will make note that the slowdowns in Dragon Ball Kai are not unique. Alot of anime is subjected to having the animation slowed down, blurred, or dimmed down. TV Tokyo is a little bit more anal about this (if you guys saw the last episode of Gurren Lagann from the TV Tokyo airing, you might see what I mean ). Most other networks generally are a bit more relaxed on these, which as far as I'm aware, FujiTV is. But it really depenRAB on the Network.

In any case, if there's ever a video release, Dragon Ball Kai shouldn't contain any of the above issues. However, I'm unsure whether or not the violence will be restored or not. Toei isn't the kind of company that makes a lot of corrections for video releases (and if they do, it's generally very minor or something that really needed to be fixed).

Speaking of violence...

I'm actually unsure as to why Dragon Ball has more censorship than One Piece, which airs directly after it (in the 9:30AM timeslot). However, there is the possibility that it may have to do with the fact that the timeslot that Dragon Ball Kai is currently in was the slot that younger children properties ran. Digimon (1-4, later 5), Gash Bell, and Gegege no Kitaro all ran in this timeslot in previous years. All were relatively tame and meant for younger audiance (with Gash Bell being a minor exception). However, I'm not entirely sure if this the exact reason, though...

Dogasu also brought up an interesting point over at Daizenshuu, that it's also possible that Toei may be looking at foreign territories as a possible market for this (which he stated FUNimation in this case). In other worRAB, censoring the material so the licensors don't have to make much changes to the material for broadcast. Something I believe most licensors aren't willing to put Japanese animation on broadcast here, unless it requires minimal changes. This just makes it easier and is less costly to the company. Of course, you have 4KiRAB with Yugioh 5D's and what ViZ Media did with the TV version of Blue Dragon... There's also the fact it's getting increasingly hard to get a network anymore to air it, mainly because Cartoon Network doesn't appear to want to deal with anime again (with that, I don't want this to turn into a "CN hates anime" thread, so let's not go there).

But I suppose it's a good theory. Toei generally does look at the foreign market for many of their properties.

I suppose we'll never know the real answer to this though...

Aint the super sayin transformation besides not hurting also multiplies the power and speed way more, like GT mentioned it multiplying the power 100 fold (then again isnt cannon so whaterver).

They'd already mentioned that they couldn't show stuff like that in this version, just like how they had to censor the huge gaping hole through Goku's body after he was hit by the Makankosappo in episode 3.

Unless FUNi decides to take the lazy way out of it by just using their existant recorded dialogue for most of the series, with a few new recordings here and there such as Kyle Hebert's narration lines.

Uh, the last 1/5 of the series was the only controvertail bit and even so only like 3 of those deserved that. Now if Japan had censorship laws like you think why would Gurren Laggan had aired on Saturday mornings and you know that series has alot of fan service. And naked Rei wasn't even seen in an explict fashion in the show now the movies yeah but not the show. Oh and I saw the first episode of this and it's well ok it takes out all the useless scenes BUT that recap in the beggining of the episode made it feel like something that would come before a DBZ movie that remakes the series.

Yes, aRAB and promos are fine. The video rule that I linked to allows for that.
Edit note: Also, treat Mynd's advice as valid for now.

So, back on topic about Dragonball.

That was a dub comment.

Super Saiyan: 50 times the base power.
Super Saiyan 2: 100 times.
Super Saiyan 3: 400 times.

Those last two figures are from a recent interview in a guide book.

New episode title: Episode #16 "The Invincible Vegeta Defeated! Son Gohan Summons a Miracle" which means with fifteen airing in two days, next Saturday I'll be posting the next talkback (already have it all written up!)
