"Dragon Ball Kai" Saiyan Story Arc (#1-16) Talkback (Spoilers)

Dont get me wrong, Im very interested in watching it, because I never watched it with japanese audio, and I never got to finish the series, but I thought they were boasting how it was redone in HD so i expected it to look better.

Well, it does technically look better, at least I think so. The colors are softer and cleaner, as opposed to the crusty old masters FUNimation got.
 
Except "creative" (filler) in Shounen sucks. They're under-budged, horribly written, and are otherwise useless except its cheaper to make filler than re-buy the time slot for that show. It fills useless space for DVD, and alienates fans of the mentioned above. It's a terrible by-product of Japanese procedures for television, and if they want to fix their mistakes, let them.

And seriously, the animation staff really don't care. Getting work for doing something they already kinda did is a better situation than most get. You are just as well saying "STOP GIVING PEOPLE WORK TO DO! THEY LIKE NOT WORKING AND GETTING PAID!"
 
I just watched episode six and it went all the way to half of DBZ episode 19! Amazing of how fast DBZ could have gone without filler.
 
Woooooah buddy. I don't think even the staff cares about the filler. Filler is called filler for a reason. It's not meant to let the staff show creativity it's meant to pad out the story so it doesn't pass the manga. If the staff decides to be creative with it... that's an amazement as it is but Dragonball Z's filler is nothing special and never was. Do the staff care if people like their hardwork or not? Maybe... as I suppose any artist would like to have their work appreciated BUT when you get right down to it if animators like the filler stories for any reason it'd be that they got paid to animate those episodes and had things been strictly like the manga then they wouldn't have made those episodes and thus would not have been paid for them.

What people want is the manga storyline or something as close to it as possible. That's why it's an adaptation. If they really wanted to be creative they could make side stories as they did with the movies and even those are hit or miss.

The director's goal in an adapation is to adapt the story by the original author maybe it's western philosophy to attempt to re-invent the wheel rather than just keep the wheel as it was... but I think Japanese producers generally want to stay as close to the source material as they can. That's what the viewers want more times than not. Honestly I've never seen anyone care this much about filler. If you want to see it again FUNimation's DVRAB or the Dragon Box sets from Japan will do you just fine.

And creatively dry shounen? Someone should watch One Piece. It's really just Naruto and Bleach of the mainstreamy shounen that have people thinking shounen's creatively dead. Sure the ideas are far too cliche at this point but they're still entertaining with the right spin (at least I think so).
 
The opening for Dragonball Kai just gave me a new respect for Vegeta as a villain. That made the slow paced never updating opening Dragonball Z that I loved tossed out the window. Come on Funi dub this..
 
Much less. Japan always has to pay a lot more for their anime. I just didn't know it was this bad. FUNi knows they can't charge that much for that little, because people just won't buy it. Whenever they do get it, they'll probably release box sets right off and have them be relatively cheap for the amount of content.
 
I think the problem with the edit is that it's inconsistent. First of all, the beam PIERCES through both Raditz and Goku (this is clear as it's seen by the audience), yet Goku's wound doesn't show any sign of being an open one. The purple stain makes it looks like it's a bruise, but definitely not something that shows something has gone through a person's chest.

Now, if they HAD to tone the scene down, they could've cleaned up the spilled blood (they were allowed to show blood on Raditz, so it's not entirely taboo), and keep the black hole in Goku's chest with SOME blood on it for the scene to be convincing.

Or, they could've edited the piercing scene so that Piccolo's beam goes through Raditz but not Goku (i.e. removing the beam coming out of Goku's back). Then the purple bruise would have actually made sense.

Of course, it makes little sense how someone who manages to survive plenty of battles with broken arms and legs dies from a PUNCH IN THE STOMACH. Oh well.

Also, the purple bruise looks terrible from a technical standpoint. Even if you've never seen the original, it's pretty easy to tell it was imposed later on.
 
FUNimation seems to be seeking the rights to it. The possibility of it hitting TV isn't very likely, though.

Wow, I guess censorship got a little tighter on the morning timeslot over the past two years, but then again my assumption could be correct
 
I don't think that's fair. There's obviously been some time and money put into this production, from the remastering to the hand-cropping to getting a new music score to getting the VAs to re-record their dialogue to the re-editing. This isn't a cheap rehash.



Well that's redundant.
