Downton Abbey - ITV1

Maybe a tad unfair to compare it with a series from over 30 years ago:). But if DA continues in this vein it will have set the standard against which the new Upstairs Downstairs will find itself judged.

True, but over the years they kept asking Ofcom for more ad time, as channel defragmentation has eroded their audience.

Two hour dramas like Inspector Morse used to have three ad breaks in a two hour slot. That has now increased over time to six.

For many viewers that has become unacceptable and they either don't watch or use a PVR.

It's more likely that the AB1 viewers they want the most are the ones they lose first.

I thought DA was really good and lived up to expectation! Julian Fellowes is a brilliant writer and brings a modern twist to "Upstairs Downstairs" type programmes :)

The gay storyline was a great twist - didn't see that coming.

Hubby and I were also embroiled in conversations during the breaks to ascertain what the problem was with the inheritance. Thank God for Sky +'s pause facility so I was able to go to the PC to try to find out. :D

With regard to UD - did you read that there is a Christmas special being filmed!! Updated to the 1930s! :D :D

I managed to sleep through last night's episode. Normally I find it moderately fascinating from a historical perspective, but I'd agree, it's not Jane Austin, and could do with a few laughs. Where is the appalling Mr Collins when you need him:D

Period drama is not really my thing, but my wife will want to see it, so I'll give it a try.
They do appear to have assembled a terrific cast, almost every luvvie in the business has appeared in the trailers.
