Downton Abbey - ITV1

Agreed! JF is nearly always excellent.
The only thing I'm concerned about is, will they flog this to death like Larkrise etc? Promising start for a Sunday night bit of escapism! Even if Julian Fellows is ripping off his wonderful Gosford Park.

I hope this thread doesn't descend into more blah about sexuality. It's really not needed.

I watched Duke Street on DVD recently. Several episodes have all been edited into one long one, so you get three hours of it with a jarring change in story every 50mins. Most odd. I posted my thoughts on it earlier in the thread: basically, apart from the main character (Louisa Trotter), I really enjoyed it. She was far too self-important and nasty to be a proper heroine.

By the Sword Divided is also on DVD, and is magnificent. Really, really outstanding. It's probably fairly unknown, and deserves more attention. Great stuff.

Liked, strangely. Normally don't enjoy ITV dramas with ex-soapstars in and prefer BBC period drama but it was good, wasn't too keen on it during the first half hour but once the introductions, contrived explinations from character to character of things they'd know already (that are meant for the benefit of those at home) I enjoyed it. It's not brilliant but it's decent enough.

I need to watch it properly - was frantically trying to get some paperwork done but will kick back and watch it - it has promise compared to other stuff I've seen ...

A valet is a senior position being the personal servant to one of the household. It is a great step-up in prestige from a mere footman. Being the valet to a Duke would be almost as high a post as a servant could get.

Thomas could probably get another post as a footman with no difficulty. Becoming a valet would be next to impossible though.

Isn't too much going on in each episode - each 10 minutes between the aRAB is like one whole episode of Upstairs Downstairs. I know we're supposed to have the attention spans of goldfish, these days, but isn't this getting a bit much.

O'brien has one of the best lines so far 'I'd like to give her three bags full, preferably on a dark night.'. That had me chuckling so much. :D

I'm bloody gutted as I've been recording all the series on my pvr, so I could watch the lot in one go one evening, only for the pvr to completely fail last night. Lost 3 episodes! Will certainly get the dvRAB when they come out, which I think is November.

He is somehow reminiscent of Alan Bates - I thought that too. Not sure if it's his manner, his looks or a combination of both.

The name is an odd coincidence, I agree. :D

Don't like Mrs Patmore, her acting is atrocious, or is it the character. Don't like O'Brien either.

Glad Mr Bates could be getting one over either of them!
