Downton Abbey - ITV1

No disrespect to Phyliis but she looks so much older the way they have use her make up. No it's got to Bates and Joanne's character. 'Cos he's just lovely:o:o

I'm kicking myself now for not recording it while I watched it. So if you're kicking yourself like me; it's being repeated next Sunday at 4.50 on ITV1!
I'll be tuning in again next week, and will record it at the same time. Then I'll be able to watch it again immediately afterwarRAB, to catch anything that I may have missed. Hence why I'm kicking myself now.

I really enjoyed watching it with you all.. I'll bring wine and munchies for us next week.

Just wanted to say, not specifically to you Loon, but to anyone who's debating the medical aspect that just because she said she nursed Boer War soldiers doesn't mean she implied it was overseas - she would probably have trained and then nursed casualities who'd been repatriated.

Cora and Edith were on This Morning today, they look very different in their `modern`clothes! They gave nothing away though for upcoming stories..:(

If that were true, that everyone is bisexual, it would mean that no-one could claim to have always known they were gay /heterosexual AND be telling the truth.;) And since being gay has never stopped homosexual men and women having children, it makes even less sense that considering yourself bisexual would impair your ability to have children?

I think it is sad that even in the 21st century people are still trying to hijack others' sexuality for their own political agenda. If people say they are not gay or bisexual their word should not be doubted. To do so is NO different to those fundamentalists who claim that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice as opposed to an inherent trait.

Yep, I do the same. I'm a proper flitteryjibbet on here tonight.

Sad about John too! He shouldn't have been there..

Any way,....

That lowlife Thomas, stealing vino!!

I'm not, just think they should stick to serious or at least acclaimed actors in period dramas rather than ex soap actors and shitcom stars (unless they're work in said soap / shitcom is above the norm) like the rest of ITV's drama output.

Actually, so was I mainly. I didn't want to miss anything. I'm going to rewatch ep 1 & 2 again in the week, to make sure I'm all info'd up. It's very easy to miss a comment here or there at times.

The estate is entailed in such a way that whoever inherits the title also inherits the estate and the man (because as a result of the British adherence to promigeniture it must be a man) who inherits must be the closest living relative by the male line. Consequently Lady Mary or her "son" can't inherit - her fiance, who went down on the Titanic, was also a second cousin and the nearest male relative by the male line to her father so not only would the estate have passed to her cousin but she would also have been his countess. This would have secured the futures of all the females in the family as they would not be "out on their ears" after their father/husband/son had died.

Had the Duke not spurned Mary then she would have married and become a Duchess and again, the future of the remaining family members would have been secured as it would have rested on the presumed kindness of the Duke.

The match with the Duke was definitely the B option - safe but not ideal as Lady Mary's mother's dowry would have remained tied up in the Grantham estate and she would have had to support her mother/sisters/grandmother.

I thought it was pretty good. It's typical of Julian Fellowes' style that there doesn't seem to be much happening but things build and build till you get really involved. Expect this to happen across the series. You can't have too much massive drama going on in episode 1 when there's so much to see yet. 6 more episodes!

Oh and I didn't know Michelle Dockery was going to be in this. Soooo gorgeous, one of my TV crushes...yep.
