Downton Abbey - ITV1

It probably was gentle and genteel for the landed gentry in those days but not so for the hoi-polloi who were at their constant beck and call.

There was even a pecking order amongst the servants which appears quite well depicted in Downton Abbey.

Absolutely! Siobhan Finneran is portraying her character brilliantly. High credit to her, as she's made me totally despise O'Brien.

I think she's terrific. A beautiful face and an excellent actress too.

If you saw her performance in Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon A Time In America, I'm sure you'd change your mind. :)

I enjoy watching. It is fiction, not a real fly-on-the-wall documentary. This programme has brought some welcome entertainment to Sunday evenings and good drama is sadly lacking these days.

No, that's not an explanation. What's grating about it? Grating just means it gets on your nerves, it jars you, so why does her American accent jar you?

The succession is the main story line of the series so far and neeRAB to be kept in focus despite all the other marvellous entertaining diversions. Last week it was constantly referred to as "the entail" which may have been lost on some viewers. This week they reminded us of it in simpler terms.

It should be on the ITVplayer :)

I think you just missed the older female maid (I've forgotten her name, the one who isn't O'Brien) forcing Bates to show her what was wrong, and then taking him to throw that contraption in the lake, but not before promising not to try and improve himself again.

And O'Brien was wondering if the Turkish guy had died in his bed, or if he'd gotten there some other way, aloud to Thomas, and then promised "your secret is safe with me."

Eeep, I watched Thorne and then had to watch Downton Abbey as soon as it was available (I'm with STV who think Scottish people would rather watch Taggart. Taggart) to take my mind off the creepiness.

Poor old Bates makes me want to cry just about every week! I did find the scene where he first went into the shop hilarious, though! Even the one-off characters like the shop owner are brilliant in this show!

Some forum members seem to be thinking of things that I never thought of and I do not think the writers of the program were! I understood that Mary and the good looking Turkish were going to have a safe cuddle that did not danger either of them. She would not have let him stay else.

I read an article in the Daily Telegraph which gave an interesting slant on ITV's new approach to profitability, which indicates that perhaps advertising revenues are becoming of less importance.

The article said that ITV now has two former BBC executives in key positions, and is reinventing itself after its share price plunged and advertising dried up. The whole of terrestrial television is fighting for survival, and ITV have recently stated that they want high-quality, original and compelling drama. Its major hits Britain
