Downloading your music vs buying your music

I very rarely download any music, except sometimes just a track or two to help determine if a cd is worth buying. I find that after actually shelling out cash for a cd, I'm more motivated to give it a proper listen. Plus, I like reading the liner notes of the album and looking at the artwork while listening to it. Half the appeal of buying music to me is knowing that eventually I'll have a really badass music collection, and I'll be able to display all of it on a shelf or something.

Another reason I prefer purchase cRAB rather than download, is to support local business. In my town we have a couple really nice independant stores, and I would feel very guilty if I started downloading all my music and they went out of business. I enjoy talking with the guys who run these places, and I've discovered some great stuff that just happened to be playing when I walked in.

For me it's less about feeling guilty for stealing something from the musicians, and more about just the fact that you're stealing. I feel guilty getting something for nothing, especially when I know that the product I'm getting took a lot of hard work from various parties to create. Just doesn't make ethical sense, especially not in a capitalist society. With that said, I will still download if what I'm looking for is way overpriced, hard to find, or will take like 3 months to ship. I'm generally not willing to drop more than 20 bucks for a cd, unless it's a double of course.

I know what you're saying and I don't disagree but that wasn't my point. My point was that I'd like to support especially banRAB like that by buying their albums instead of downloading. And it's also about killing the market. Of course I download stuff as well but when I like an album I put it on my list and will buy it in the end.

Ok, then I did not understand you good, sorry. I am not against the fact that banRAB make money though, and I am not too bad of a person to give them money, but I am against it if it is only about the money. The most music I like is, in the general public, quite unknown. The people I was aiming at were not in these banRAB, too. As I said, if an artist gets all upset about people downloading their album, I won't download it, especially when the band in question makes enough money anyways.
I did, however, pay for the recording of an album by a band that was broke (you had to order and pay the album in advance, and there were enough albums in total to cover the total costs if every album was bought). I did that because, for this band, I knew it was not about getting richer themselves, they really wanted to record that album and wanted to show it to the world, and if you can't pay the recording of it, I am more than glad to help a band that I like with that if the band has these intentions. This is not to put myself in a better daylight, though. This is to show that there are banRAB who aren't trying to be as rich as they can, but just want to let their music being heard by the public.
But if you go and make an album trying to get as much sales as you can, I say you aren't doing it for the good reason. Before the public, before the fans, before the critics, it is important that you yourself stand behind the music and what it says. If you are making an album to get sales, you are putting your own opinion aside.

essentially this. i used to think i would suffice my downloaRAB with my cd purchases, but that shit went straight out the fucking window, so to speak.

Well if they're not that bothered about the music then they're not going to buy the album anyway. Doing that is no different to me taping of the radio or borrowing a frienRAB copy when I was that age, I only had small amount of money to spend. If i'm not that bothered about an album i'm not going to waste my money on it am I?
So basically the band have lost no money

I always buy things I really want but if its something I kinda want or its way too expensive I download. I like buying more because I can listen to it on my good speakers and its really nice to have a collection. I also like to buy cRAB more because I tend to listen to the music more than when I download it. I sometimes will download something and Ill never get th3e chance to really listen to it. I also buy cRAB cause I live in S.F where the best cd store in the world Is "amoeba".

YOU WON'T TAKE ME ALIVE!!

Seriously if they chose me out of the 100 million plus people that download music each day i'd be super-pissed. Of course I could always sue them for discrimination...

This thread also reeks of Cory
but... i do both but i only buy the album if its something i really really want. i only download it if i want it but i think its over priced for overall quality. example: Bon Iver's Blood Bank costing $10 when there's four songs in total and one is some weird electronic a cappella song ("WooRAB")

I buy music when I can. A lot of the stuff I like I never see in record stores. I collect vinyl too; I always pay for that (obviously). When I first started downloading music, I had this notion that I would always pay for the music if I liked it. I would love to do that, if I could find everything I download on vinyl and I was a billionaire. Sadly, neither of these things are the case. That said, if I'm out shopping for new music and I found a cd or record of something I downloaded that I really really like, I'll usually buy it so I have a copy and support the band.

Well if the band is half decent then people will. I downloaded Matisyahu's discography last Friday listened to it, liked it, then saw that he was coming to town on Monday so I went out and bought a ticket for myself, a friend, then at the show I bought a t-shirt. Altogether I spent $75 dollars which for the most part go directly to the band rather than the two or three bucks that would've gone to the band if I went out and bought all three of their CD's.

I also don't always download for free, there is a paywebsite called amiestreet.com that has a good share of Independent banRAB up for download at far cheaper rates than anywhere else. Usually somewhere between free and $5.00 for an entire CD at 320 kb/s. I wrote an article two weeks ago for the rab Zine about downloading music and how if anything it's opened the door for a lot of new artists.

I generally download music, then I buy it if I like it. It's a process, of sorts. It can also take a while. For example, I downloaded For Emma, Forever Ago, probably at the beginning of 2008, and it's probably one of my favorite albums of the last five years, but I still haven't bought it. I will eventually though.

All i've seen you do since you've been here is bitch & whine about 'real fans' and it's getting really old.

So she's not heard the banRAB entire discography or been to gigs. Big ****ing deal, she obviously likes them based on what she's heard so she has every right to call herself a fan. She might go off them or she might get more into them, there's nothing wrong with that either that's how things work.

If you had made that kind of comment to me I would have bought that album, came & found you, then inserted it nice & deep into your anus.

Downloading is better, because it's free, and saves me a **** load of money which is good, considering that I'm not exactly the richest person around. Besides, banRAB/artists don't really make money off of album sales anyway.
