Downloading your music vs buying your music

This. I couldn't agree more. I was showing someone my Itunes yesterday and totally realized I haven't listened to half the crap I have.

15-20 minute drive?

Takes 40 minutes to get to HMV from my house.

How come you prefer used record stores? I prefer HMV because I know I'm gonna get what I want there. And I don't know of any record stores close by :(

Least you're not a total music sponge just downloading, if you go to the concerts then at least you're giving something back :)

Theft?

The only people who would steal are scummy chavs, hopefully your music collection wouldn't catch their eye. If it does, that's a reflection on your music taste..

I'm a big fan of the physical product. After all, there was no internet when I first started listening to and collecting music. I'm proud of my collection.

However these days, partly due to the internet and a wealth of information at my fingertips, I am discovering more stuff than ever and just can't buy a physical copy of everything I'm interested in. Back in the day, you'd hear about stuff on TV, the radio, through frienRAB, or by browsing around the record store. Now, it's all that plus online forums, online stores, online reviews, etc. and everything links to more similar stuff and the discoveries are just endless. It's really overwhelming as a music addict. I have 20 pages in my Amazon wishlist of stuff "to check out", meaning I haven't heard them yet and need to check out samples.

So basically I may download something to screen it, and buy it on CD (eventually?) if I dig it. If I really dig it, it'll get purchased on CD rather quickly. Also if I'm checking out a new discovery and the CD is available used online for really cheap, I may just purchase it right off the bat if I'm interested enough. If it's a band I love and will buy unconditionally, I will buy on or shortly after release date, and will not spoil it by downloading it first. I want the full old school album experience of holding and examining the physical album while listening to it for the first time.

I used to record songs I liked off the radio because I couldn't afford to buy every song I liked. Does that make me any less of a fan OF THE MUSIC?

It's true about touring acts, but touring definitely takes its toll on their personal and family lives, not to mention the physical and mental exhaustion that comes out of it.
It's the other half of their job.
Where some of us love to see them perform, we still have the opportunity to listen to their music when they're not touring. They work hard in either scenario and touring/recording enables the success of both.

I just think we need to use some personal judgment and really ask ourselves if we're contributing. If we can say "yes" in good conscience, then we don't have to blame ourselves.

Oh, I do that all of the time.

The only thing is though, I never did get my Automatic Loveletter CD.

And that was disappointing. Because I don't want to download that.

I still buy vinyl recorRAB cause I like having a physical copy of something-and it sounRAB better, and you give the album the time it deserves, rather than burying it amongst about 1000 songs you don't actually listen to.

If it's the stones or zeppelin I'll download because they're going to be dead soon anyway

^^^

Exactly this. Spot on. Cassettes were our internet back in t'day. You would have to wind the electricity meter and eat coal and everything back in those days.

idk, but it seems that you guys have to try to keep a steadier pace when getting albums. i mean, getting new music is great, but you gotta know when to stop and start at a time, otherwise you get flooded with stuff that you may end up not listening to.

idk for me, i get a couple albums at a time, but once i get them, i go through them ASAP. i also rate each song and go through everything at least once, so if i stop between albums, i can know where to go by play count or if it's not rated.

like right now i have some albums backed up that i just got a few minutes ago, but it's nothing a day or two of going through them can't fix.

i dunno i guess i just like the feeling of supporting the small businesses more than going into an hmv. i like the atmosphere a lot more aswell, walking into hmv i feel like im walking through the music isle at walmart. its just a different atmosphere that i like better.

also yeah if i REALLY like an album ill usually go out and buy it, theres just something different about owning the album that makes me appreciate it alot more .
