It's impolite not to say 'bless you' to someone but... I don't believe in 'bless you'! Because it's short for 'God Bless You' and I don't believe in god. So why has this - a religious sentiment - become like wiping your feet on the mat or keeping you elbows off the table. I even heard once that it meant 'God bless you the devil leave you' because people thought you were sneezing out the devil. Even restarting your heart! I don't believe it but if I don't say it I get death glares...! And there's more too but it's six in the morning and I haven't slept so my pardon if I cant think of any. Ha ha.

I bet you use the word Thursday and yet don't worship the Norse god of thunder?
Common expressions are no different. It will be good when everyone uses them only out of tradition and indeed, that IS the way most people mean it. I mean wouldn't you have to be a priest to literally bless someone? It's just courtesy.

It doesn't really bother me, actually.
Though I tend to not say 'bless you' nowadays. I do like the Koreans do and carry on my conversation as if it never happened at all.
Gotta love Korea.
