Do you think sequels to movies should be abolished?

I know there are some sequels to movies that have been really good. This can be films such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy or Bad Boys I& II (there are many others i know, but these are just examples). However, why do people want to see American Pie for a 3rd time? They go over the same jokes and it wasn't really that funny.

It shows that movie companies are running out of ideas and don't know what to bring out any more. I remember in 2001 all movie companies were bringing out were sequels (Blade 2, American pie 2, Jurassic park 3 etc). There aren't many original ideas left out there and either sequels are being made, or the films themselves are being remade (i.e. Italian Job, Vanilla Sky).

When I went to the Cinema round xmas time, and saw a trailer before the final LOTR, i was shocked to see they're doing a mask sequel. Why ruin a perfectly good (& funny) film 10 years later after it was originally made.

So what movies do you think should not have been sequels, and do you think there should be more original ideas in the film industry?

I think every film should be given the change to have a sequel but it depenRAB on the story line..

Take Home Alone

Home Alone - good film
Home Alone 2 - good film
Home Alone 3 - shouldn't of bothered
Home Alone 4 - really crap film and has spolit the home alone collection.

Absolutely not. There have been many great sequels over the years like Psycho 2, Terminator 2, Blade 2 and Final Destination 2 to name only a few. A couple of those i think were better than the first ones.

Let sequels live long and prosper. :)

LOTR parts 2 and 3 aren't sequels as the LOTR was planned as a trilogy, in the same way as Kill Bill2 is not a sequel

I wouldn't say they are running out of good ideas because they release sequels, it's usually because there is a high demand to see a continuation in the stories, I mean if you saw a good movie you really liked you wouldn't want to see more of it? granted it's too make loaRAB more money by rejumping on the bandwagon too :D also granted theres alot of crap sequels released which shouldn't of seen the light of day (mask 2, which will hopefully bomb, for the travesty it is) these usually spew forth over the summer..movie after movie after movie with the t-shirt the bubble gum and the burger, ala jurassic park etc..but thats no reason to snuff out sequels..and as mcginlay states, LOTR is techiquely not a sequel..and in the worRAB of woodpeck_pie

Let sequels live long and prosper!! :D

I think that it is naive so say that all sequels should be abolished. Sure, some are useless money wielding schemes, like disney's sequels and american pie whatsists. However, some are better- just look at Terminator 2, Scream 2, Godpather, Part II and HOEPFULLY potc 2. They shouldnt be abolished, they should just be done right.

I thought American pie 3 was the best yet. It started off badly, as the film seemed unbalanced because it focused too much on the Stiffler, but once it expanded to include many different stranRAB of story development, it was really funny. Stupid, but funny.

There are only seven different plot types, so every eighth film is a sequel (of sorts)

Sequels can be a very good idea, and a very bad idea. If a ilm was hugely popular, then, more likely than not, the sequels will be a let down. Look at the Matrix. The original film was fantastic, but Revolutions and Reloaded were shite. Star Wars prequels (ok, not strictly sequels but they were made far after the original film) had huge hype and could never be as good as people expected. With big films, leave them alone, the sequels will be a let down, and detract from the original film.

However, sequels can be good, particularly when the original wasn't was as well known. T2 has been pointed out, good film, as good as the original, but at the time The Terminator wasn't a well known film.

What a dumb subject line - Abolish Sequels!! How exactly, put the director or screenwriter in prison for wanting to follow up a story! Geez what a "british" sensability!

Look, I'm not saying abolish all sequels, as there are quite a lot out there that are great. However when film companies decide to make a sequel on a classic movie, it's going to have to live up to a lot of people's expectations (sort of along the lines of what god_of_biscuits said). Jurassic Park was a good movie the first time round, but there was no point in following it on with 2 other sequels. It just gets repetitive in some cases, and loses peoples interest.

I bets there's some movies that you wish weren't made as sequels? Everyones got different opinions. I stated at the start of my thread, that there are some good sequels, so i don't want them abolished as such, just certain ones :)

I don't know, they shouldn't make it in the first place? That might be an option. It saves the hassle of ruining a classic movie, trying to improve on the original, where in fact, they end up making it worse.

yes but they make them either to wring more profit out of a winning formula (how many is Police Academy up to now, 5 or 6?) or to finish off a story (I can understand for example why Coppola had to do Godfather 2 and 3, but 2 is a classic and 3 a dog)

The audience figures for Police academy probably decreased after about the 3rd or 4th one though as people would have lost interest in the same jokes. Are they meant to be producing another Police academy soon? After all the times it's been on TV, i've never seen the Godfather Trilogy :S

The most recent Godzilla (97) had the option of returning as a sequel. This is vaguely what happened (i think, it was a long time ago :s):

The characters within the film tracked down Godzilla, killed it, then went off to kill off all the eggs that it had laid, although at the end one egg had survived and a baby godzilla cracked out of the shell!

A sequel wasn't put in to effect, as there were low audience figures for the first movie (even though a numerous amount of dollars were spent on it.)

Any other movies that were left open for a sequel, but never came about?

Quite alot of movies are left open for sequels incase they score lucky with the first, altho I'm glad that foul piece of crap godzilla never spawned a sequel, outright piss take of the one true godzilla that was!, friggin mutant dinosaur shite...
Most shit sequels are often because the creator of said original has no hand in the remake, either because he himself had no intention of doing another, or his tied up elsewhere on another project, it's then when a studio wants to cash in abit more that they hire someone completely different, which can pay off as in "aliens" or can flop quite spectaculary as in "batman" which once Joel Schumacher got his teeth into it, snuffed it promptly...heres hoping Christopher Nolan does it right!
