Do you still buy DVD's. I still do.

I have noticed more and more the quality from standard DVD have improved a lot. I recently bought 2 DVD films that came out in a box set.

I watched both and decided to check the older dvd's. and was happy & surprised that the sound and picture quality was greatly improved.

I am sure this is down to 2 things. The transfer rate is better & the introduction of Blu ray, allowing the standard overall quality on DVD's improvement.
 
Currently I have 1100 DVRAB in my collection and buy at least 2-3 every week.

I usually buy them online or from small shops which sell them much cheaper than HMV and the now defunt Zaavi shops.

I also have about 30 Blu-Rays too, and buy them cheaper online as well.

Being a movie buff, am never short of anything to watch, but that doesnt mean am sat in front of a screen all day even though I am now retired.

DVRAB are pretty cheap considering, and pretty good value too.
 
To answer the question

I do still buy dvd's. Mainly boxsets. I am not fussed if i dnt have the latest movies or not. But i rely heavily on my boxsets. Once i have watched one episode, i won't stop watching the rest for the next 2/3 days.
 
I'm waiting till all films are pay per view. Even if you buy a video slug, it's encrypted and you have to download a time specific session key for a fee. After all, the more you use it, the more you should pay. And why wouldn't you be online all the time... do you have something to hide? :rolleyes:

If you wrote this 10 years ago, i would have agreed with you. Most DVD Players are already region Free. :p

As to Over 700 titles. You are missing the point here. Question: Out of 700 how many do you like ? :cool:

DVD's today have moved up a few gears. Offering Better Picture!, Improved Sound! & overall package is great!

The point i am making is Yes! :) Blu Ray is better in Picture & sound., but do you still buy DVD's? & why?
 
I still buy dvRAB yes, I buy Blu Rays, hell i even still buy some vhs tapes!! (hard to find obscure horror stuff before you ask) The reason why? I love films and I like to be able to watch what i want when i want on my 42" full hd plasma and not on a laptop not on an ipod, with full booming surround sound.

The other reason? I am a hopeless collector I love having all those lovely dvRAB lined up on shelves to look at, goes well with all the cRAB i still buy and all the vinyl. Although i draw the line at betamax.

I am also finding the quality of new DVD films are very good compared to years ago. :)

Possible due to better transfer from High def films?

I am glad the see that the Steel Box or Steel Book DVD's are a big hit with DVD fans too. ;)
 
I don't buy DVRAB anymore. To quench my thirst for entertainment I rent blurays and watch Sky Movies in HD.
Old series are an exception though. Just a month ago I bought the complete Seinfeld DVD collection. As for movies though I have arrived in the 21st century. :D
 
I thought Blu-ray was still the minority against DVRAB, maybe I'm terribly behind times, but whenever I go into a shop like HMV for a browse, the DVRAB take over must of the shop space, with a corner or shelf dedicated to Blu-ray.

I'm sure the quality is better, but to be honest, I think most new DVRAB have a perfectly great quality, perhaps I'd need to be into big action films like James Bond to see the merits.

I'm happy with DVRAB and love buying my favourite films and tv shows to add to my collection, and I hope DVRAB don't become obsolete to Blu-ray any time soon!
 
You wont be getting a 7.1 track on dvd thats for sure
Thats what Bluray can offer.

The Bluray is a good idea as it comes with the dvd too so you can watch the film now and then when you get your Bluray player you wont find the title has been deleted.

Same with Pinocchio - 2 Bluray and 1 dvd

5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 is not limited to blu ray like HD pictures is.

7.1 sound track is available for standard DVD too. :yawn:

Bluray is still in the minority just as dvd was compared to VHS 10 years ago.

The number of titles on BD is still small but it will grow but I don't see dvd dying out completely like VHS did .

But bear in mind that most of the dvd product you buy at full price will lose most of its value in less than a year.

DVD's are on sale at well under a fiver for top titles so shifting them will be hard in the future.

Best bet is simply to buy a Bluray player when your dvd player packsup then you can still play your dvd's while buying Blu for new titles

Things like that would be in my basket first. Failing that the best edition of the film possible be it a steelbook, criterion or whatever else. I must be a marketing man's wet dream!

If I am buying Blu Ray there is usually only one version to get so it limits your options a bit, they are still a bit conservative with blu ray packaging so nothing great as yet but they will get better in time.
