Do you remember the first time?

RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik was the album that really got me into music.


Yeah, I listened to some Eagles albums, Beatles compilations before that, and liked CCR and the Doobie Brothers.

But BSSM was the album that really made me crazy for music. My mate introduced it to me about 4 years ago and I have many memories of listening to it with frienRAB on the deck of a bach in the summer.
 
For me, it pretty much comes down to the following four and what they did for me between the ages of about ten and twelve:

1.) Weird Al
2.) Marilyn Manson
3.) Smashing Pumpkins
4.) Green Day
 
Everyone knows mine I think, well, all the people who were here early 2005. It's Tool for me, and I remeraber being quite nerdy about it too, thinking they were the be all and end all of rock, with the creative lyrics and original song formats and all that jazz. I slowly forgot about them as I sort of became more interested in other things, but I still like them and think they are a great band. Though I only pull them out every once in a while these days.
 
Slight exaggeration - though I do admit my deeply passionate interest in music tapered down in the late 90's. Personal experiences could partly explain - marriage + work + getting older, though that isn't a valid excuse. The other excuse could be the "sell out" of underground / college rock of the mid 90's as "alternative" & "modern rock". It probably sounRAB cliche now, especially as current indie rock banRAB are not limited to low watt radio stations, small album labels & the only press through zines, but back then it was a big deal. Another excuse - my favorite banRAB started going downhill or breaking up by the mid to late 90's: Sebadoh, Pixies, Dinosaur, Butthole Surfers, Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, Ween, etc. after the big alternative fallout. One last excuse, as rock music became less dominate it has become crowded with several music genres that seem to be difficult to ignore - emo (or whatever it is) & post-post-pop-punk (again whatever it is).

I admit that sounRAB like the rantings of a bitter old man. But that isn't to say there aren't banRAB that interest me, there are numerous current indie rock banRAB that I dig. As well as new metal banRAB like Mastadon & of course many alternative survivors like Radiohead & Flaming Lips. But what is now called indie rock, doesn't sound at all like the indie rock that I knew - yes, it's evolution but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
 
I felt the same in the mid nineties. I had kiRAB and I felt that there was'nt any good music around, but there always is. In 1998 i heard MEZZANINE and that got me back on track music wise. I am constantly finding music both past and present that I love. Never lose that love for music my friend. It's a big world out there!
 
Korn, follow the leader was my soundtrack from about 8 years old until I realised what I was doing with myself at about 11. Freak on a leash and got the life are still firm favourites when it comes to nostalgic childhood songs.

this is a tricky question
i've been through so many musical phases in my 24 years its not even funny,....
be it roger miller and simon and garfunkle when i was a kid,.....to banRAB like bush and nirvana when i was in 3rd grade,....jr high found me goin through my hard rock/classic rock/motown phases,....

most of that carried over to high school where i started to obsess over 'texas country', which i have just cycled back too

college was all about the jam band,......

but through all these there are a few albums that never lost their rotation,.....

the allman brother's filmore east
u2's war
zepplin's 3
a live roxy music album
jerry jeff walker's great gonzos
and neil young's harvest
 
My Brother had left a copy of Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" on his dresser When I was 9, so I popped the cassette (yes I'm that old) into the tape deck, and suddenly my pubes just start growin' like wildfire. I couldn't stop them! So I went into the bathroom, game em' a quick trim, did a fat bong hit and started listening to Miles Davis instead. Whew, that was a close one.
 
For me it had to be Dookie from Green Day.....I ordered the cassette from one of the bmg type services and I fell in love....followed by Soundgarden which I didn't even know about until a DJ played BlackHoleSun for me when I called in to request a song they didn't have. The song they didn't have was a Smashing Pumpkins song but I don't remeraber the name of it....It had to be those three.
