do you have to use the 3.5 socket to connect to car stereo?

Ive got a Clarion cd/dash dvd unit that I used to use my ipod touch on. I had a lead that plugged in the bottom of it. Trying to use the same lead on my 2g iphone and it doesn't work. Does this mean I can only use the headphone socket to connect it?
