It's a warm and fuzzy thing to say "We should respect all cultures" but it seems like someone would have to be dishonest or dumb to believe that considering everything that goes on in the world. How does anyone rationalize respecting all cultures?
Here's some examples of cultures I'm not a big fan of:
In America there is a subculture of people who like to train dogs to fight each other to the death. Some of these dogs are drowned and tortured in training. The mostly negative public reaction to Michael Vick's participation in dog fighting and his resulting jail time show that as a whole American's don't respect that culture.
There's also the tradition in some third-world lands where the natives mutilate the genitalia of young women in religious rites, thus scarring and damaging these women for life. I personally don't know anyone that respects a culture that endorses such things but maybe they're out there.
On a lighter note how about silly things like Saudia Arabia's ban on women drivers? Talk to any girl and you'll hear about how little she respects a culture that would allow such sexist views in this day and age. Alright I'm all exampled out but I think I made my point, thanks for your time!
