Whether it's a "thank you" in words or materials, etc. Do you expect any form of gratitude? Would you feel offended if you didn't?
I see my act of kindness as a self-satisfaction. To expect any gratitude just seems like an ugly act. In religion(although I'm not religious), I think it should be a sinful act. I don't care if one thinks that it's common sense for someone to appreciate any kind act. I just feel it's wrong to expect them after doing something. I give money to the homeless sometimes because I wanted to. Even when I gave one of my coat to a street child who just took it and ran off, I'm still satisfied because my goal was to just give the jacket to the kid.
PS: However, telling your own child to say thank you is a different story since it's for their own good. And doing something for someone in business is a different story as well. That's "business" and not "kindness". It's common sense to expect something in return.
