enlightenment? From the age of reason where most great scientific breakthroughs came, onward to the world wars, and now to what to me appears to be a society of mindless consumerism which has long abandoned the rational and intelligent ideals of its predecessors, in favour of ideals of beauty and materialism.

Do you believe we have taken a step in the wrong direction since the age of enlightenment?
 
reminds me of something my history teacher said. this essence of it was that we develop technologically faster than we can consider the outcomes...
 
I think the problem with what you wrote is that you seem to be over romanticizing the 'pre-enlightenment'. You are comparing great thinkers of the past with average people from today. I think that great thinkers of today are just as aware and intelligent as those from the past, and that average folk from the past are not any better than those of today.
 
What you see as materialism is the end result of several generations of prosperity and security. Societies become decadent when they are not threatened. The true trials of a people begin when they have reached just such a state of decadence and an outside threat manifests itself.
